  1. Thank you very much guy's i'm chuffed to bit's with my prize, i've been wanting to read this series for some time now but some other book has always caught my eye, now i have no excuse's :D

I'll try my best to write a review when i finish this book, my literary skills could do with a bit (if i'm honest.... a lot!!) of fine tuning but i'll definitely give it a go

    Thanks again guy's :)

  2. It's not been such a good start for the gooners, only one point from the first two games, already eight points behind the scumbags from Manchester, think they need to get thier fingers out

Oy! Please watch the language, they are saints :(

Sorry couldn't help myself :D , there has and always will be a massive rivalry between Leeds and Man U, 99% of Leeds fans have probably been brought up with "Man U are scum" drilled into them so please excuse me for i know not what i say

Oh by the way Southampton are the saints :smartass:

  3. An excellent piece Cato, i take my hat off to you :clapping:

On a personal point of view i'm finding it pretty hard to come up with the right things to say and backing it up with the correct source :frusty: , it would take me forever and a day to come up with something of the likes i've just read.

On the positive side, it does make fascinating reading and i've enjoyed being able to click on the source's and have a good flick through the histories( which have been saved in my favourites for future reference ;) )

    Keep it up!

  4.

Could these maybe the slingers or even archers??

    Nope check the link

Top row center and top row left.

Legionaries Throwing Javelin (they have pilums in their hands)

Legionaries Attacking with Sword (they are armed with a gladius)

these are legionaries without body armor. . . Foundry seems like a knowledgable company that bases its molds on historical fact. What gives here?

    Severus

Mmmmm a tricky one i'll continue to look into it

  5. Looking to start collecting a Caesarean army of 28mm figures. I went to the foundry site and came across models that are shown with the hamata armor I am familiar with, but there are also units of legionnaires shown wearing only a cloth tunic, helm and shield. Could anyone enlighten me on this and point me to some source that would show Caesar's legions going to battle without armor?

I have read the Gallic Wars and Civil Wars (not recently mind you) and I have no recollection of this sort of attire.

    Thanks in advance,

The idea behind this experiment is to increase the resources of UNRV. You may have noted in the past that UNRV is often cited as a source by other sites. The Rules only apply to this particular sub-forum. The other fora remain as they are. You may continue to have your fun and I will continue to be my sarcastic self. If the resources of UNRV are increased, all the discussions may benefit.

I hope that this allays your fears.

    Spurius:

Nothing will be thrown out for grammatical errors or prose. An editor(s) will handle such matters. A person's grammar, spelling or prose will not enter into the picture. One would not want to loose the contributions of those whose native language is not English or whose fingers mis-type. Nit-picking will not be an object. Nor is pretension an object. The expansion of UNRV's resources is the sole object.

Contribute; suggest a topic; be a tyrant!

Could you please give me a bit more info on the role of the tyrant i.e whats involved??

  7. Gaius. I have an uncle who lives in Veneto of Italy and he said once:

"Venetians are the biggest theifs of the meditterenean. They were so 700 years ago and they are so today. They know the whole comes to Venice once. and with that mentality they rob all of it" lol...

Anyway the city is a true European marvel. Nothing quite like it in all of europe.

    Haha how very true

i wish you'd have told me that about two months ago, but seriously i wouldn't have missed it for the world it truly is a beautiful city

  8. I have a few pro's and con's

    PRO'S

Citation of sources- it will make people think before just jumping in with any old tale they've heard or seen in a film/novel

No tangents, stay on topic- it can be quite annoying when somebody just goes off on a totaly different path and you lose the basis of the thread

Building a complete biblography of source materials- fantastic idea!

It will encourage people to do proper research, that bit i'm quite looking forward to

    CON'S

It could scare quite a few people away, one of the great things about this forum is the easy going nature, i think with the new changes it could become stricter and more regimented which could put people off, especially the novices( i must admit i'm a bit weary myself, being a relative beginner compared to some of the big hitters on this site :D )

I think it could be pretty hard work for the moderators, it might be a little bit more than what they want or are capable of doing

At the end of the day we'll never know unless we try it, so go for it

  9. The Tory party are wanting to ban Romanian's from working unrestricted in the UK when Romania joins the EU.They say the Government got it wrong when Poland joined up and Polish nationals were allowed to come into Britain and work, they dont want Romanian's to have the same privilege.

The Labour party claimed that 12-15,ooo Poles had came into Britain to work, but the actual figure is more like 250,000.I find it shocking that the Government doesnt actually know how many migrant workers are here!but thats Britian for you.

But as nearly all those 250,000 are actually working (200 or so are claiming unemployment benefits) i dont see what the problem is with the Poles, there's three working at the same company as me and there a great bunch!it can be a bit of a brain bubbler trying to communicate with them as none of them speak English yet but they get the idea in the end :D

    Daily Mail

    L

The problem with the 250,000 Poles that have come to this country to work is that there's 250,00 Englishmen out of work and if the same amount of Romanian's turn up looking for work then that's half a million people out of work, the problem is that the majority of the immigrants coming over are in the construction industry and will work for a lot less money than the English guys so obviously the big companies are going to employ them.

I have quite a few friends in the building trades who are struggling for work at the moment because of the cheap labour so i totally agree with the goverment (for a change) about banning anymore immigrants coming into this country for work.

Please don't take offence by this Kosmo i have nothing against the Romanian people or any other Eastern European country, it's my goverments fault in the first place and i hope they manage to sort this mess out amicably

  10. To be honest i'm pretty glad it didn't happen because from a personal point of view i dont think a toga would do me any favours what so ever and as for transport horses are ok but they tend to leave big piles of s*** everywhere :horse:

You would need a seriously big poopa-scoop :D

  11. I see our friends from across the pond have started a thread about American Football(how you can call it football i'll never know? :P ) so i thought we in England should have our say on "the beautiful game"

I for my sins am a Leeds United fan :frusty: with nothing to look forward to at the moment, it'll be a few more years before we're back in the big time where we belong, i'm just waiting for a Russian billionaire to come along and do a Chelsea on us :D

    What about you guys??

  12. Romulus Augustus

(a barbarian chieftain of Hunnish/Scirian background), and besieged Ticinum where Orestes had taken refuge. They besieged Ticinum where Orestes had taken refuge.

Think you may have repeated yourself here mate think you might have repeated yourself here mate :D

  13. J. F. C. Fuller, often called the Clausewitz of the 20th century, had a very different opinion of Caesar.

Except for his settlement of Gaul, and his reform of taxation of the eastern provinces, as a statesman he created nothing; neither a rejuvenated republic, nor an acceptable monarchy, let alone anything resembling the Principate, which his adopted son, Octavian - an incomparably greater statesman - did. ..

"as a statesman he created nothing" I personally think this is a bit harsh, one of Caesar's greatest achievments was probably his long and patient handling of the problem of debt.

He did this by enforcing a new set of regulations regarding the payment of loans to creditors whereas the debtors could repay the loans in land or property at pre-war prices instead of currency which at the time was very hard to find due to it being hoarded against better times at the start of the cival war.

After his new regulations came into force, financial confidence started to come back, and money began to to be freely lent and borrowed. In this field, Caesar had achieved more than any previous statesman; he had broken the back of the republic's most unmanageable problem.

  14. A fantastic source of information, cheers PP

I've just been browsing through it and there's one part that puzzles me a bit (granted that's not very hard), it's in book I : Selection and training of levies, it states that the standard for the cavalry of the wings and for the infantry or the first legionary cohorts was fixed at six feet tall or at least five foot ten inches

Now i was under the impression that the ancient Romans were quite a small race in general with the average height of about 5ft 8", is this just a myth or a figment of my wild imagination :)
