  1. Oh, I've read The Stand, GPM - one of his best. Yes, I loved that one - thought it was pretty well-written, and perhaps some of his best characterisations. I actually read both versions over the years - the cut-down one and the full. I didn't think they did it justice when they dramatised it.

The TV movie they made was pretty terrible really, very low budget, a shame really, if some big Hollywood producer had got his hands on it then it would have been much better, it has the potential to be a pretty epic movie.

  2. I see . Now, that he lost the cup (by his arrogace), Sir Al will make a meal out of the frog .

BTW - In order to see the two games it will cost -

    550 $ (flight)

    150 pound (sleep, 3 nights)

    600 pound (300 per game)

    250 $ (food and stuff)

That is some 8,000 Sheqels !!!

Oh, and one big fight with Lady S

    Dreaming...

  3. I've now turned to total trash for the daily bus journeys and am wallowing like a pig in..... in Stephen King's Christine After that I intend to get back to serious research - I think my brain will need to be reminded that it works. Ah well, even old Stevie has his place in the dreary agony that is my daily route to and from work.

Before you get back to some serious research you should definitely read The Stand by Stephen King. It is IMO the best book written by King, it's quite a hefty book with some 1000+ pages but it's a serious page turner and I got through it in no time.

This will surely turn your dreary agony into a thrilling journey in no time!!! :D

  4. I can make out a few of the words in the song but that's about it, my Latin is really poor.

It would be nice if some kind scholar could translate it for us wouldn't it?

Oh!Our eternal Rome, city of the seven hills!

Here the roads lead, the rivers flow and here is the old Capitolium.

Oh!Our Rome, once kept safe by geese, was made of marble bricks by Augustus Princeps.

Love (your name spelt backwards) still lasts to this age.

Let us cry out "Immortal Rome, we salute you" etc...

NB:Roma spelt backwards is Amor, which means love in Latin.

On the day of the Natalis Romae there will be celebrations at the Circus Maximus, with legions coming from all over Europe. You are all invited to the Circus Maximus (5.30 p.m.) to celebrate the founding of Rome ;) .

Thanks for the translation Silentium ;)

I've always wanted to see the Natalis Romae celebrations, I've seen lots of footage before and it looks fantastic.

  5. A reasonable explanation, but it leave another question in it's path, why was the area never very romanized? Fair enough it was under Roman influence for a shorter period of time (I've never really read anything on the Romanization of Britain) than some other areas but it should still be enough?

    A shorter period of time?

The Romans were present in Britain for 367 years, they officially (not counting Caesar's brief flirtation in 55/54BC) arrived in 43AD under the invasion of Claudius and finally left the island for good in 407 AD when Constantine III was proclaimed emperor by the Roman troops in Britain and crossed the Channel with all of the remaining units of the British garrison, Roman Britain effectively ended. The inhabitants were forced to be responsible for their own defence and government

  6. For those reading my blog (and everyone else too ;) ); I will be gone for about one week from now on, as I'm off to Naples tomorrow and there is no reason to believe that the hotel will provide any internet access.

I'll be back next Saturday/Sunday with a load of pictures!

    Klingan

Have a great time in Naples mate. I'll look forward to some more excellent pics!

  7. But how much of it was lost after the retreat and fall of the empire?

That's the sad thing about the whole decline of the Roman Empire not just in Britain but through out Europe. So much was lost and left to fall into dis-repair or plundered that what we are left with is just a small fraction of the greatness of the Romans. But yet we still remember and study them to this day.

It just goes to show how much of an impact they had on us, that once the Romans had had their day the whole of Europe quickly and unceremoniously slipped into the dark ages.

Do you know why the Brits lost Latin as their language when it was preserved in so many other parts of the empire?

I'm not intirely sure but I would hazard a guess it was probably something to do with when the Anglo Saxons arrived in the 5th Century??

  9. As far as I am aware the Romans are portrayed very favourably in the UK, love them or hate them you can't deny that the Romans were by far the most advanced race of their age. When the Romans invaded they brought death and bloodshed to the island but once the tribes had been pacified and subdued( this didn't happen over night by the way, it took many many years of fighting and hard work) Britain, well at least south of the wall, was left a much more civilized, cultured and modern country. The "What did the Romans" sketch from Monty Python funny as it is, hits the nail on the head.

What the Romans did for Britain can not be underestimated and I think the people of England fully understand and appreciate it. As for the barbarians on the other side of the wall I can't really comment, they've got a chip on their shoulder about most things so they'll probably have some complaint about the Romans!!

  10. yes it has been on the news for quite some time in Germany now ( 4 or 5 weeks ), a lot of blogs have spoken about it. The discovery is exceptionnal, the CNN news report is far from giving the details : the remains of the battle are so neat that on can see how the roman made an artillery and archery preparation of the terrain, with the arrows all pointing in the same direction ( thus giving the roman position at the start of the battle, in the north ( ! ) of the hill ). Hundreds of arrows heads have been found, dozens of scorpio bolts being also found. Which to me is a bit surprising by the way, because it means that the romans did not try to collect all those precious ammo back from the field : maybe they were somewhat in a hurry with a larger barbarian force in their back ?

This is very interesting excerpt from one of the many blogs on Kalefeld...........

The greatest amount of weapons has been found on the northern slopes of the Harzhorn. The way finds are distributed indicates the possibility that part of the slope has been hit by a mudslide that took material with it. The article also stresses the unusual discovery of an obviously unplundered battlefield. Broken wagons, hundreds of missiles sticking out of the ground (not buried too deeply then) and lost equipment must have been visible for years until woods covered the place. One possible explanation the article mentions is that the area was considered taboo. Strange as this may sound to us, the Germanic tribes had beliefs we can only guess at since the Romans seldom mention them (and not everything Tacitus wrote can be taken face value). Though such a taboo had not been invoked for the Varus battlefield, at least not until much later. The question remains unanswered for now.

Research of the battlefield has only begun, and every day can bring to light new finds that may change the prospected model of the events.

We don't know for sure the size of the Roman troops. Since they brought a train and torsion catapults, it can't have been a small unit, the article says. This is interesting because so far the number of about 1000 men was mentioned in most articles about Kalefeld. It would indeed have been a small troop to send against hostile Germans - Varus had three legions and six auxiliary cohorts, Germanicus six legions (a legion has between 5000-6000 men) plus cavalry, and I'm pretty sure more than one legion would have been needed on a punitive expedition or preventive foray against several united Germanic tribes deep inside German territory.

Therefore the thousand men who fought at Kalefeld probably were a sub-unit of a larger army in the surroundings, perhaps on an expedition or the armed escort of an embassy. Even if the presence of Romans can be connected with Maximinus Thrax' camp-aign, I doubt Kalefeld is the site of the Battle of the Swamp. Sure, there might have been swamps in Roman times, extensive agriculture drained many of those, as the Varus battlefield of Kalkriese shows, but it would have been a mere skirmish compared to other battles the Romans fought. Imho, the Romans of Kalefeld either belonged to some different expedition not mentioned in the sources, or there were several military conflicts during the campaign, and the Historia Augusta only mentions the most important.

The following scenario seems possible according to the present discoveries, the article says: Roman troops on their way back from the north found the path blocked and fought their way out upward the slopes of the Harzhorn. Obviously the Romans were victorious thanks to their superior technology, but had to retreat to the Leine valley because of the ongoing threat from the Germans. And from there, I suppose, back to Moguntiacum at some point

  11. I think Arsenal will beat scum....errrrr... I mean Man U over two legs. Arsenal have hit some good form, they've got their top stars back from injury and are looking pretty good at the moment. Where as Scumchester United are a bit wobbly, and not as solid as they were earlier in the season.

The Chelsea Barcelona tie is gonna be a real beauty, I think the key to the game will be keeping Leo Messi quiet if that is at all possible??? It could be a man to man marking job for Essien again, he did such a good job on Gerrard in the last round that hopefully he can keep Messi out of the game too, but Messi is a different kettle of fish all together, different position, more skillful and tricky. One things for sure it will certainly be an interesting match up.

So hopefully we'll have an all English Final this year Arsenal V Chelsea.

  12. Sorry Paulinus ... it's going to be Canada's turn this year. I've a small bet on the Canucks. We'll know more after the game on Friday.

Well good luck with your bet Maty, I fear you're going to need it!!! :)

Although I think the Bruins will win it I've also had a small bet, but on the Blackhawks instead, much better odds than the Bruins.

  13. THE STANLEY CUP 2009

Well it's that time of year again!!!

Who's going to take the Stanley Cup home this year?????

Will the Red Wings do it again or will we have new champions???

I'm going to put my money on the Bruins this year, although they've got one of the toughest 1st rounds against Montreal. I think they've got enough quality to progress, with the best defence in the NHL I think they'll be hard to beat. San Jose and Detroit will also be in the running and I think the Blackhawks could well be the dark horses for the cup!

    My predictions.................

    Eastern Conference

    Bruins V Canadiens...............Bruins

    Capitals V Rangers...............Capitals

    Devils V Hurricanes...............Devils

    Penguins V Flyers.................Penguins

    Western Conference

    Sharks V Ducks....................Sharks

    Wings V Jackets...................Wings

    Cannucks V Blues..................Blues

    Blackhawks V Flames.............Blackhawks

    What do you guy's think???

  14. Churchill's, THE English Pub? Yes, I know it. Nothing wrong with that but let me know next time you're coming and I'll take you to see some really cool bars around Brussels (some of them over 300 years old).

    Your on!! ;)

I just realised how sad that sounds, an English man in Brussels going to an English pub. That wasn't the only bar we visited though, we did take in some of the Brussels culture too you know. It was just that Churchill's was the closest bar to our hotel and in blizzard like conditions we didn't really feel like doing much walking if you know what I mean. ;) Plus it also showed live English football and sold English crisps too (Walkers) We'd been away from home for quite a while by this point and just craved a few home comforts!!! :P

  15. I'm a Sign Installation Engineer, I spent 3 months installing and repairing Lexus signs through out Europe. It was good but just a shame we had to do it in the winter months instead of the summer months! ;)

Wow, not bad! Pity indeed that you came in winter. Brussels is quite a lively place in summer with its bars, cafes, open air concerts, etc. You should give it a another chance.

I certainly will. Despite the weather I thought Brussels was a great City, very cosmopolitan, I met some very nice people in the short time I was there and also found some very nice bars too. Churchill's being one of them, do you know it?

  16. May I ask what you do that you have to work outside?? Are you an engineer?

Yes, wintry landscapes normally look more romantic in photos that in real life, lol. I do like snow, but I would be lying if I said I'd rather be here than Brazil in December (I did get some rain there as well but at least I could go to the beach afterwards  ).

  17. You have some cool pictures! I recognise many of the places you've been to. And I like your photos of Brussels too - I missed all that snow as I was not in Belgium this past winter.

I was working in Brussels in November/December 08 and the weather was atrocious, it pretty much snowed and rained for three days solid and I was working outside Brrrrrrrr!!! ;)

I particularly remember one Saturday night, there was a serious blizzard going on, it was that bad that we couldn't leave the pub until it had calmed down!! I was really really gutted..............Not!!
