  1. Saw the Eagle last night and thought it was better than expected and better than reviewed in my local paper. I'm not really a big fan of fighting and violent movies so would probably not have gone to this movie if it wasn't set in Roman Britain.

It was definately better than The Centurion. I thought the acting was good. Donald Sutherland was better than he was in Pillars of the Earth.

The scenes of Scotland were amazing. I liked seeing the Roman house inside and out. There was just a quick view or two of Hadrian's Wall. I would have liked to have seen more. The Wall was treated (as in Sutcliff's book) like a defense that it wasn't safe to go beyond, which from everything I've read isn't really true.

I thought the Seal people looked too much like Mohawk Indians and didn't think they would always be covered in woad. There were other things I would have changed but I've probably said enough and don't want to add spoilers. I think most of the audience enjoyed it.

  2. I'm not sure that the Romans collectively thought that the empire would come to an end, but I'm sure there were individuals, in power and out, that had the imagination to see an end sometime in the distant future.

In response to Ursus' comment "I think by the time of the late 3rd century they had been finally clued in that expansion was at an end, but total defeat seemed a remote choice." I've just been reading Everitt's biography on Hadrian and it seems that Hadrian in the early second century made the concious decision to halt expansion and build boundaries around the empire in order to prevent a downfall. Of course, that didn't stop later emperors from trying.

I also was confused by Dr. Fears comment that democracy is not a value in the Middle East and then he goes on to say that "no people have ever had a true democracy who were not touched in some way by the genius of the Greeks." The Middle East was as touched by the Greeks as Europe (maybe more), so theoretically it should be a value there. It's not as if the West have had democracies throughout history since the Greeks.

  3. I'm from Canada - Victoria, British Columbia (on Vancouver Island) where I was born. I did live on the mainland (Vancouver) for a few years but couldn't stay away. I wouldn't mind living in Britain for a year or so to see all the historical sites and to travel regularly to Europe, Turkey and North Africa to see the Roman ruins.

I love history (especially Roman) but there is a decided lack of historical sites here. There may be history but it is invisible - nothing much older than 150 years!

  4. ummidia quadratilla, you are a princess of Gaul, brought up and educated in Rome as a foreign hostage and "houseguest" of the imperial family...

    Thanks Nephele

It is wonderful to know I have royal blood. As long as the imperial family treat me well, I won't run away to Gaul and start a liberation movement!

  5. All true believers know that Jesus is not God. That's why they believe. It is left to your lot to draw conclusions from the Bible and it is against Holy Scripture for others to do likewise. Read The Book of Basil.

I'm not sure I want to revisit the Council of Nicaea, but if Jesus is not God who/what is he? I know he is the Son of God but does that not make him a god?

I heard a program a few weeks ago with religious questions from children of various faiths. One Jewish girl asked about Jesus and said that she believed Christianity to be polytheistic because there was God and there was Jesus (not to mention the holy ghost).

So is Christianity truly a monotheistic religion?

  6. I'm new here as well. I'm from Vancouver Island (Canada) and came across this site when researching a short story I was writing set in Vindolanda during the building of Hadrian's Wall. Last autumn I had the pleasure of spending a day and a half near Haltwhistle and went to Housesteads Fort and Vindolanda. I need to go back and see the rest of the wall. That trip also took me to the south of France where I went to the Theatre at Orange and the Pont du Gard.

I finished my honours degree in Greek and Roman Studies (focus on Roman Social History) in 2002 as a mature student who decided to follow her passion in her thirties. Anyway I love this site and will start posting, especially now that I realize I can improve my position in society!
