  1. Hi, Steve here (aka Lawrence T) ... I'm an archaeologist involved in the Garrison excavations in Colchester, working on both the circus site and at the southern end of the Butt Road Roman cemetery. It's cold out there, but I wouldn't trade places with anyone at the moment. Fantastic stuff! I'm also frantically trying to set up a dedicated website - www.colchestercircus.com The excavations continue until the end of Jan, followed by more geophysics and then . . who knows? What I do know however, is that there are plenty of people who support the notion of further study.
  2. Remains of the only known Roman chariot racing track in Britain have been found in the former Roman capital, Colchester. A spokesman for Taylor Woodrow, the housing firm which paid for excavation work at the site, said the walled structure was more than 350m (383yds) long, 70m (76yds) wide and appeared to be "one of the most significant Roman finds in Britain for decades". Bob Russell, British Member of Parliament for Colchester has called for the town to be made into a World Heritage Site. Mr Russell said "I believe that Colchester's already strong case for inclusion in the UK list of applications has been dramatically boosted with this latest discovery, which is one of international significance". Lumen is very proud to announce the launch of the only website dedicated to this unique find - Colchester Circus which will update daily with latest news and information regarding the on-going excavations at the site. [Mod Edit: added in the actual url link=PP]
  3. Hi there, I am an archaeologist on the Garrison/Abbey Field site where the circus has been discovered - it is a genuine pleasure to be involved with something so significant. At this stage, Taylor-Woodrow haven't even designed the development and as a consequence, intend to work with the monument, rather than against it. This, I believe, will take the form of a large open space area. There's also the fact that English Heritage could well schedule the site. For all the latest info from the site itself, you should check out www.colchestercircus.com
