While not being an expert on the subject, everything I have read suggests Britannia simply tied up three legions that could have been put to better use elsewhere. The possibility of naughty British chieftans trying to aid subversive Gauls seems to pale in comparison to the benefits of having three more legions stationed on the Germanic frontier and Persian border.
I tend to agree (although not complaining about Roman remains being visible in the UK) that those 3 legions and countless numbers of auxilia could have been deployed in Gallia if the occupation's intention had been to prevent aid to discontented Gauls. But then Claudius wouldn't have won himself a triumph for that.

Thanks for all the replies, most enlightening.

Over 1900 registered members and only 15 votes?
One more.
I put the legions, etc, as that's the subject that kicked off my interest when I was a child and most weekends my parents would take me to Hadrian's Wall.

The current Chinese government does not particularly like research into this, as it confirms that not only have the Chinese been grabbing land off other people way earlier than they did in Tibet, but also that they may have originally colonised the Asian mainland from Japan!
The original 'Chinese' came from Japan? I don't think even the most nationalist pro-Yamato Damashi scholar in Japan could now claim that, with most to varying degrees accepting modifioed versions of the continental origins theories proposed by Egami.

I can assure you, Flavius, that here is one who would NOT!!!

Having read that even in the suburb of Rome where the Julii lived that there was a synagogue, would anyone happen to know when did the first Jews settle in Rome, what were their roles and how well were they accepted (I'm imagining pretty badly).

Most of the killing would have gone on during a rout.
The gladius would seem an ideal weapon for close-quarters stabbing actions with an enemy coming head on, so in a rout I'm guessing a slashing/sling/hacking weapon would be more appropriate?

Well, as we all love ancient roman history there is probably somthing wrong with each of us. If we jump to the throats of others only for the reason that we dont agree with them about somthing what happend over 2000 years ago, it means that we really need medical help
If only the rest of the World would see it so clearly.

My sister is into studying geneology, and she has traced two branches of the family back to Border reivers in the 15th Century. Unfortunately, after going back a few generations, hundreds can be descended from the same person.

Thus, with these factors in mind, would it be safe to say that most casualties caused by legionaries of the late-Republic/early Empire were caused by gladius rather than pilum?

Yes, I too missed the documentary

In the article it says there may be as many as 12,000 wrecks in Irish waters; 12,000?? If so I'm surprised anyone ever got there.

Coffee enemas?! My god, after receiving one of those, flatulence must feel like a walk into Starbucks.
I know Starbucks coffee is pretty poor, but putting it where the sun doesn't shine?

Presuming that there were Moslems in the Empire, what is known about them and their status?
Meaning in the Eastern Empire (after the 7th Century)?

Does anybody know which emperors after Severus increased the pay of the legions? No doubt, in order to secure a healthy transition to power, most of the 3rd Century emperors increased, or at least promised to increase, the pay of their soldiery.
Caracalla, who seems to have trusted no-one but his troops, increased legionary pay to 675 denarii.

BLAST! I MISSED IT! Once again, my defective memory strikes...
Good section on Robin Birley at Vindolanda and the investigation into the tablets, but from 'Timewatch' I expected something a little more debate-starting or controversial. Most unfortunately seemed a little like a rehash of what is already common knowledge. But I guess anything historical on mainstream UK TV has to be welcomed.

I've just finished Tom Holland's Rubicon, and I get the distinct impression of Cicero as an eloquent weasel. Am I mistaken or Holland over-the-top?

Thanks Nephele, just glad I'm not a dung-collector or pig-poke

If there is a half a century as important as this to Western history I am unsure what it is.
But the era is a part of 'Western history' to start with

Here's one link to an agriculture site.
Another page from the an agriculture company (Camel and camels milk...).
And finally, The Camel in Eritrea: an all purpose animal (maybe we need a smiley with a hump.)
:horse:
Many thanks; you live and learn

Jolly ugly, can't imagine it will replace tuna on the sushi menus.

Its also worth noting that Julius Caesar almost doubled the pay of soldiers to the original imperial rate.
After Caesar, thgose emperors who raised wages actually then had to debase the currency, making payrises rather hollow.

Hadn't certain citizens ridiculed his claims that he'd killed Geta in self-defence?

'Lost Legion' is about Honorius being taken to Britannia, etc, not China.
