  1. I've got an interest in the phrase "HIC SVNT LEONES", which I understand translates to "here are lions" and means the region marked with the phrase is unexplored and wild. I read that it was used on Roman maps to describe areas outside of the Empire, particularly in Africa. However I can't seem to find any examples of this. I was hoping somebody here could provide an example or even confirm that this happened. The nearest thing I found was the "Cotton Tiberius map" around 1025 with "hic abundant leones".
