All it takes is one random Crow/Raven sitting on a fence IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE and the whole freakin' worlds about to end...STOOPID HOOMUNS!

I have heard about this, I think, in just about every news source known to man! I would love to know why scientists are not doing something with this money on "Zombie Research" that is useful to humanity! Not that I am not into the dead some-day walking the earth, eatting everyones brains and here comes the next evolution of man...or anything....just wow...in todays world...this is all they can do is research Zombie attacks?
They really should be researching the vampire menace, clearly a more sophisticated threat.
refer them to all of Neph's literature if they need proof!

In a bizarre parasitic death sentence, a fungus turns carpenter ants into the walking dead and gets them to die in a spot that's perfect for the fungus to grow and reproduce.

Just like the female of the human species....

The Warriors have come third to last in the NRL..... the ALL BLACKS are probably going to bomb out of the Tri Nations, South Africa (THE ENEMY!) to win.... Serena Williams arse is driving me to distraction, but I know she's married to Common who could probably kick my arse in fifteen different languages... I'll lie and say life is freaking FANTASTIC!

I'd have to agree with Sylla, Parmenion's father was a Macedonian nobleman called Philotus so that and the fact that he was Phillip II of Macedon most loyal and trusted general must go a long way to prove he was of Macedonian stock.
In one of David Gemmills novels it has Parmenion as the son of a Spartan warrior and being raised as a Spartan but this is just fictitious, so this could be where some of the confusion about his heritage comes from but as far as I'm aware he was 100% Macedonian.
Cheers all... to be honest, it was the Gemell book that got me curious. Nice spotting that man/woman/otherwise! (just taking the piss GPM!)

Importunus the Uncertain... not likely to have a long career!
-
That's fascinating. I wonder if it was indoor or outdoor?
-
There isn't a whole lot of information on this obscure Macedonian or his actual heritage. I could read a whole heap of books, or just cut to the chase and use the internet. All contributions welcome.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. The party started Saturday; it's Thursday now, and we're still going! And happy birthday to you, Wotwotius!

Thank you Nephele for another excellent list. You know, once you finish all your compilations, we'll have to publish these in a combined format somewhere.
I fully second that emotion.

I have not been to the site for a long time, but I noticed that one of our most eminent contributors, Cato, is not as prominent as he once was. This is a shame, because I always really enjoyed the terse one's writings. Is he OK and still active? Or has life just intervened on him, like it has on me?
It would be a shame not to be able to tap his brain and thereby skip reading the whole Loeb Classical Library!

The cognomen Sulla; what does it mean and what are it's origins if anyone knows. This question may have been asked already, so forgive my laziness in not checking if it has (my computer's a dog!)
-
Hey dude or dudette -
I had the same idea, and I named my band after my favourite Roman - Caius (three guesses which Caius). Maybe that'll help. I'm in a metal band now, and that one we've named Sulla - I tend to get my way with names! I toyed with Agelastus - it's a no no to smile in metal, so Agelastus (never smiles) was a candidate. I reckon that the nicknames that romans had for each other are good for band names.
You're right to ask Neph. She's the naming oracle!

I might as well get this over and done with:
RAH RAH NEPH!
I'm a cheerleader!

Mean thread, sis. Information that I've always wanted to know. Cheers for the heads up, too!
NEPH IS THE BOMB!

Scullard, Goldsworthy, and our distinguished member Maty. Of the ancients, Tacitus. There are people on this site who may or may not be published historians, but what they write here is more often than not excellent to someone like me. Cato, Nephele, Primus Pilus, Ursus, the list goes on for yards and you get to watch them debate topics as well. Better than wrestling.

I'm interested in Ancient Egypt, but I'm mad about Rome. There's a lot more b.s to dodge about Ancient Egypt, and as a natural consequence a lot more Ancient Egypt crazies with alien conspiracy theories and maps to hidden treasure. Romanophiles are a dry bunch really - just check out the humor on this site! I like that people interested in Rome are so from a sane distance. There is a romanticism to Ancient Egypt that puts me off.

Just finished reading Animal Farm and Keep The Apidistra Flying by Orwell again. Sobering stuff. Some animals are more equal than others....

Mate, good post. Money and things, although important, are NOT all they are cracked up to be.
Family and friends and their love for you are your only true reflection of your worth on the planet. When you go, they are your immortality. Money doesn't matter snot, really. And if it does, then those you leave behind to argue about the will are focusing on entirely the wrong thing. I will leave memories behind me of a good man who did his best to make sure his family was all good. I will never be forgotten and not because I left behind riches, but because I bought my kids up to be good people who know how to love before they know how to spend.
Don't mind me, people. I'm drunk.
2008 was a good year, all the better for being a bloody hard one. I look forward to 2009 and wish a fantastic new year to all.
OPTIMISM. Always.
GO THE KIWIS!

ahhh but in the vast scheme of things does it really matter?
Yes it bloody well does! Especially to one eyed Sabbath fans like me.
Give me early Santana.
I agree with you there - early Carlos, not that Supernatural dribble.

Sir Paul makes me cringe full stop. Kewpie doll motherf***! And rock should never conform to grammar. It just wouldn't work.
As for The Wall, isn't it just one big Roger Waters wank? That wouldn't have happened if Syd Barrett had stayed sane! I was always glad that Roger pissed off up his own fundamental orifice of a solo career and left David Gilmour to it (even though our Dave has been re-hashing the same song for the last 20 years!)
Gilmour's guitar work is the shiznit, though. Icy tone, three note bends, makes your spine tingle. He and Carlos Santana are examples of guitarists you don't have to see to know who they are - you can tell them by their tone. That to me is a testament to guitar greatness.
But The Wall? There's better stuff in their back catalogue.

Ozzy. He's a shambles but he's still the man. Nerve disorder my black arse! The Blizzard called Oz just took to many mind altering substances in the 70's.
Dio was cool too but what was up with all the fairy and elves imagery? He sings like a girl. Ozzy sings like a man!

Me and a mate decided to revisit our wasted youth this year as our christmas theme. We dressed down in our oldest Slayer t-shirts, turned the metal up to 11 and got hammered! We bought ourselves a keg for christmas and drank the lot between us. Fun at the time but now my head feels as if it was cleaved in twain by a gladius. Merry Christmas and a drunken New Year to all!

I finally have an opportunity to go back to school after three children and two marriages. And my love for history is as undiminished as ever. I want to take up history as a major. What are my future prospects in this line? Sad to say, most history majors I've known end up working at Burger King or stuck in some call-centre. With a family to support, what would be the best thing to do? Thanks in advance.
Go for it. Don't take any notice of those who end up at Burger King. They cheaped out on the planning. Plan your strategy and follow it. If you love history, you're on a head start!
If I could sit at a desk for longer than an hour, I'd be doing it.
Take the oppurtunity while you can. Go for it!

Cool pix mate... I see you throwing up the horns in a couple of photos there, or is that a friend? Are you guys into METAL?
