  1. It is a sad fact that rape has been used as a weapon of war for thousands of years. I agree with the OP that a rapist should NEVER be regarded as a hero, irrespective of any acts of bravery. Condoning rape during times of war is implicitly saying that it's ok under certain circumstances. It should never be ok, whether in times of war or peace. It is mildly comforting to know that there are international resolutions and statutes in place that condemn rape and other atrocities and quite clearly label them as crimes against humanity. I say "mildly" because sadly, more often than not, international law is simply ignored.

  2. @Viggen: It wasn't just the ladies who had outrageous hairdos. Guys could be pretty creative too. B)

    @Ghost: Hadn't heard of Scarlet Fantastic but they sound (or sounded) quite all right. By the way, I just love the British pop/new wave/rock bands from the 80s - they were pretty prolific at the time!

  3. Rucanor Aluminium Baseball Bat customer review on Amazon UK:

    This bat is perfectly weighted and will suit any UK shop-owner looking to protect their property.

    Thanks to the ergonomic handle, one easy swing should be enough to shatter patellas, skulls or any other bone on your targeted looter. Personally, I would recommend also investing in some fingerless gloves for extra grip.

    What the...?? :blink::unsure::rolleyes::lol:

  4. Cool! I remember visiting both houses when I was in Herculaneum in 2008. :)

    I never knew such partitions existed in the Roman world, then again as the article states most never survived. But with glass? I'm blown away (pardon the pun). Thanks to the OP for bringing up this topic and thanks to Ludovicus for the wonderful links.

    I'm not sure if I understood you correctly but the glass covering the wooden partition is just there to protect the ancient wood and is not an original feature.

  5. In Brazil, we use the expression mau olhado for evil eye. One of the must common "amulets" for protection against the evil eye (and also as a symbol for good luck) is the "figa" in Portuguese ("fica" in Italian), as already described by Lodovicus. Apparently it has been used as such since Etruscan times. Interestingly, in many cultures it is regarded as a very rude gesture. So apologies if this offends anyone.
