Mel Gibson starring as "Mad Maximus" hehe. Not the highlight of his career, I guess.

Given recent headlines, this disclaimer should be a lot longer.

Always interesting to hear an alternative point of view, whether it's accurate or not. Let us know what you think once you've watched it, Caldrail.

Oh my, this thread is old - it was started almost 10 years ago so it's funny to read what people were watching back in 2005.
I'm currently watching Game of Thrones and Hannibal (a bit gruesome but superbly done!).

Actually no, according to the Newcastle University website, the course starts on 22 September and registration started yesterday (2 June):
So there is still time! :-)

It is a sad fact that rape has been used as a weapon of war for thousands of years. I agree with the OP that a rapist should NEVER be regarded as a hero, irrespective of any acts of bravery. Condoning rape during times of war is implicitly saying that it's ok under certain circumstances. It should never be ok, whether in times of war or peace. It is mildly comforting to know that there are international resolutions and statutes in place that condemn rape and other atrocities and quite clearly label them as crimes against humanity. I say "mildly" because sadly, more often than not, international law is simply ignored.

Love Eddy Izzard, he's got the most brilliant sketches on languages (Latin, French, German, etc). By the way, he's brilliant in Hannibal (the tv series).

@Viggen: It wasn't just the ladies who had outrageous hairdos. Guys could be pretty creative too.
@Ghost: Hadn't heard of Scarlet Fantastic but they sound (or sounded) quite all right. By the way, I just love the British pop/new wave/rock bands from the 80s - they were pretty prolific at the time!

I was feeling a bit nostalgic today and having a little 80s revival at home when I came across this "gem" of a video clip. It couldn't be more eighties and even includes a part played by Cleopatra and Mark Anthony (or is it Julius Caesar??). Enjoy! :-)

Wow, breathtaking! Could this be in Turkey?

Well, I suspected it would go fast but not that fast! Note to self: in future do not pick any Italian locations unless it's somewhere really really remote...
Over to you Bryaxis.

Ok, here goes...

Too far east? Hmm, in that case I'd go to Sicily which has a strong Greek heritage. Could this be the San Giovanni church in Erice?

How about Montenegro?

Macedonia?

Rucanor Aluminium Baseball Bat customer review on Amazon UK:
This bat is perfectly weighted and will suit any UK shop-owner looking to protect their property. Thanks to the ergonomic handle, one easy swing should be enough to shatter patellas, skulls or any other bone on your targeted looter. Personally, I would recommend also investing in some fingerless gloves for extra grip.
What the...??

FYI, I started a similar thread back in 2009. Guess it's good to refresh these topics from time to time.

Cheers to you, Mr. Ghost! Hope you have a swinging day.

Cool! I remember visiting both houses when I was in Herculaneum in 2008.
@ Crispina
I never knew such partitions existed in the Roman world, then again as the article states most never survived. But with glass? I'm blown away (pardon the pun). Thanks to the OP for bringing up this topic and thanks to Ludovicus for the wonderful links.I'm not sure if I understood you correctly but the glass covering the wooden partition is just there to protect the ancient wood and is not an original feature.

In Brazil, we use the expression mau olhado for evil eye. One of the must common "amulets" for protection against the evil eye (and also as a symbol for good luck) is the "figa" in Portuguese ("fica" in Italian), as already described by Lodovicus. Apparently it has been used as such since Etruscan times. Interestingly, in many cultures it is regarded as a very rude gesture. So apologies if this offends anyone.

I've been there but unfortunately before the museum was revamped. Would be curious to see what it's like now.

Excellent review, Ursus!
As you say, Rachel Weisz is a talented actress and can be forgiven for featuring in silly movies like "The Mummy". For instance, she gives a stunning performance in The Constant Gardener (one of my favourite movies!) for which she received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Wishing you all the best, Crispina!
Vandals destroy prehistoric rock art in Libya's lawless Sahara

For a moment, I thought the article was referring to the Germanic tribe (Vandals) rather than just modern-day jackasses. It doesn't make it any less sad though.
