A teenage fascination with Roman history born of Allan Massie's sublime 'Augustus' led me to studying ancient history at university. After graduating I toured the amphitheatres of Western Europe, before a collision with a moped in Rome left me unable to visit anything on the other side of the road, which was a shame because there was some really great stuff there. Dejected and rather bruised I returned to England. But my interest in Roman history never left me and 10 years later I dared to return and be enchanted all over again.
Author of Palatine, the first in the four emperors series which examine the years 68/69 ad in a hopefully entertaining read.
