  1. Small-Town is the widely accepted archaeological term for a village, i.e. a lesser settlement that wasn't a town. How do we know if a settlement was a true town? *It could have a tribal name indicating it was a civitas or could have something like "Colonia" before the name. *A forum-basilica has been discovered or known to have existed for the settlement (or a mixture of public buildings such as bath-house(s) with temple(s) and a street grid).
  2. Can you come up with a list of known Roman Towns on the quickest route between London to Rome during the time of, say, 150 AD? I'm offering the following cash rewards via PayPal
  3. I see! Thanks... I should have checked the cities to get my bearings... now I can see it's the middle rhine, but there's still some forts that seem separate to the limes. Thanks also for the translations; much appreciated!
  4. I can't read French. Can somebody kindly explain what this map is supposed to represent? I've searched the names of some of these forts in Google, but can't find any information about them, and I don't seem to recall any of my English books on Roman Gaul and Germany even mentioning such fortifications, but then those books don't even discuss the "Saxon Shore" forts. However, I did hear mention of "limes belgicus" (no info to be found again) and was wondering if this map could represent that?
  5. Many thanks for your comprehensive reply! The only book I have is The Complete Roman Army, but the info you provided is completely lacking in that publication, so hardly "complete"! Thanks again, and for the cited sources.
  6. ...by filling in any gaps! BEFORE AUGUSTUS (Who were the Legions?) 125 BC: Massalia needed Rome
  7. Can anyone please explain the exact meaning of this quote? What is the source of this info? "...and after the reign of Augustus all new colonies in Gaul were full Roman colonies, so that the number of Latin citizens was reduced." http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=IWV5flr...p;q&f=false Could it mean that all Civitates were upgraded to Coloniae or does it simply mean that Municipia were reduced? Also, I've heard a rumour that certain gallic towns with a forum-basilica, such as Paris, only held vicus status? True or false?
