You can imagine that guy being part of the Claudian invasion of Britain.

Looks like a legionary of the Tiberian period (early 1st Century AD)
-
Amazing looking owl on the carpet there!
-
It looks very Peaceful.
-
A cavalry sports helmet I believe...
-
An excellent Murmillo helmet...thos Gladiator re-enactors can get a little serious some times. I read a few years ago that a fight had turned real at an event in Caerleon and the Gladiators had to be taken away to hospital.

Athena's owl does look pretty funny fighting with it's sticks!
The owl was on the standard coinage of athens as well. You know the one with AOE written on it.

That's a very impressive Oak, reminds me of a pair of trees not far from my home. If you would go there at a certain time of year you would see the sun set between them. It was a wonderful sight, yet unfortunately they were both cut down for some reason.
Some of the trees in Notthingham forest are thousands of years old as well. Or so I had heard.

That's one magnificent looking bird with it's colours!
Ramases, sorry to hear about your own bird.

The Picts must have been impressed when they saw that. The Auxillaries on the wall did their job pretty well for a long time. It's sad considering the stone from the real wall was torn down by the Victorians to build roads.
-
Looks like it could be used as a cover for a book on the Legions.
-
It's very serene...
Damn, Summer is coming to an end...wish I had spent more time at the Beach (but the weather wouldn't allow it).

Never seen this movie, except right at the end...I think I imagined that Nero converted to christianity at the end.
Nero like burny stuff...
-
It looks a bit like a BAFTA award...and the prize for the best Emperor goes to...
-
I like Corinthian type helmets too - the bell cuirass means that this must have belonged to a wealthy citizen.
-
Woah! he has a horn or tooth coming out right in the middle of his face.

Just goes to show how much damage these weapons could make. reminds me of a skeleton of a Viking or saxon that was dug up by archaeologists. The body belonged to a warrior who had fought at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066 - and they were amazed at how much damage this man had suffered their were sword and axe marks across his entire body.

Good thing we have English Heritage to preserve these monuments. It's a brilliant picture.
-
Now that's a cool looking helmet.

I just have to sing....
BADGERS! BADGERS! BADGERS!
MUSHROOM! MUSHROOM!
how did you manage to get so close to the badger? did you take the photo out of the window?

Why did the Romans get front page news?
Cool picture by the way!

How much of the actual fighting stances and techniques of the Samurai have survived to modern Kendo? I have read articles and books on Japanese warfare in the Medieval era and beyond (Edo Jidai 1615-1850) and they say that many of the fighting styles of the Samurai were completely different to those practised by many martial artists today.

Great picture, although Vercingetorix wouldn't have liked much

I had always wondered why the rich decorated the triclinium floor with food scraps as I have seen it illustrated in numerous books. Thanks Pertinax!
