A little way behind the line of the Wall, this is the cult centre of the soldiery. AS I blogged it came to light when a drought exposed the tops of the walls to view in 1949. I was forced to abandon further recce here as I was pelted with golf ball sized hail , only ten minutes after taking the shot "toward Vindolanda". <_<

Quite cool

Thank you. Freezing more like. Note please that the Mithraium is kept small purposefuly, the sense of claustrophobia is alleged to be intimate with the cult, if as some say this involves the "burial" (literally) of the initiate followed by re-birth to the light . The internal colour scheme is suggested to have been deep blood red and yellow ochre, with elaborate fresco motifs.

Look at all the water. That really isn't good for preservation. It's amazing how Hadrian's Wall has withstood the British weathering.

1 minute later I was driven off site by some very painful hail. The plentiful water is a significant reason for the siting of the defences in this area
