Herwig Wolfram`s (University of Vienna) The Roman Empire and Its Germanic Peoples is often refered as must read on that topic....

...and going through the Duckworths catalogue, this title is not exactly what you are looking for but maybe something (as you have interest in paganism) that might interest you...

Pagan Goddesses in the Early Germanic World: Eostre, Hreda and the Cult of Matrons (Studies in Early Medieval History)

cheers

I am very late for the conversation, but I know that The Germania was a great help to me. It is written by Tacitus, who was a famous Roman in around AD 100. It is baised towards the Romans of course, but it is very helpful for learning the tribe names and the culture of the Germans at the time.

So if anyone is looking for information on the Germanic tribes, this book is a good start.
