Melvadius Posted October 4, 2010 Report Share Posted October 4, 2010 Now I don't mind a bit of speculation about how a 2,000 year old coin could end up buried just below the modern ground surface in America but this item in the Salem News seems to have gone for the totally illogical as the best option following failure of initial research looking at it possibly coming from a modern coin collection. The owner of the spot where the coin was found commented as follows: Brewer-Siljeholm called it an "unsolved mystery" and acknowledged her research has suggested there are hundreds of ways the coin could have gotten to Manchester. Brewer-Siljeholm noted the harbor is very close to where the coin was found and thought that the Phoenicians may have came here to trade with the Vikings. "The Phoenicians were great sailors," she said. I woudl have suggested an alternative theory that it could represent the 'lost' proceeds of a robbery which possibly went unreported or at least was not 'honestly' reported for whatever reasons by the owner. Viggen Posted October 5, 2010 Report Share Posted October 5, 2010 150 years ago a british helper at an archaeological site in Palestine stole a coin, and lost it a few days later to a comrade at a game of poker, this gentlemen went a few weeks later to the USA, there he met and married Anne Whiteclift who happend to be the daughter of a wealthy farmer in the Salem region. He moved there and settled in. 20 years later when his son then turned 18, he got this coin from his father as a birthday present, the boy not knowing about the significance and value, threw it away in anger on the near by field, where the coin remind for 150 years till it was discoved in the 21st century... how about that! cheers viggen Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

This coin was thrown away when the owner realized that it will not be accepted anymore by the slot machines on the Eilat cruise ships.
