During which period? I've always said there was a world of difference to the confident conquerors who swept across Europe and marched arrogantly into the roman senate against the settled and reluctant tribesmen of Caesars day. I also note that the Gauls readily adopted latin culture as well (once conquered themselves), which aklthough has overtones of capitulation, it also suggests they were willing and able to progress their society even if they did so under foriegn social mores.
