It's the first structurally-identified Roman villa in north-east Wales," said Dr Caroline Pudney from Chester University, who is leading the dig.

It has the potential to change our understanding of the rural landscape in this area.

Dr Pudney said: "The Roman Villa is really important because it is the first one discovered in north east Wales so far, which has has the potential to change our understanding of rural life in the Roman period in this part of the world.

Mr Grenter said: "We have really been scratching our heads over the Roman period in north east Wales over the years, there is a few sites, we are aware of, but they all seem to have military connections."

He added: "We have had no real understanding of what was happening in the countryside, so the possibility of a villa here, suggests there may be more villas waiting to be found in the area."

ORGANIZERS of an open day at Rossett's Roman villa site have revealed that the event has proved very popular.

The open day is taking place at the site of the dig in Rossett tomorrow (Saturday, September 18) and all of the tickets up for grabs have been snapped up by people eager to see for themselves this historically important find.
