Illegal Warwickshire detectorist nabbed

Recommended Posts

The temptation to find ancient artifacts must be great, especially since they are so prevalent:

“A novice Warwickshire metal detector enthusiast was arrested for undertaking a Roman treasure hunt at a protected monument. Warwickshire Rural Crime Team say that the south Warwickshire man had failed to educate himself on what he could and could not look for. They say that the man, who has not been identified, explained under caution that he had been hoping to find Roman treasure as he went about detecting on an Ancient Scheduled Monument.”

About time someone got caught, but the reality is looting archeological sites is a serious concern worldwide. I remember a group visiting a site in North Africa for a television documentary, only to find a large area of pot holes and mechanical digger trenches. Former colonial powers get a lot of modern criticism for taking stuff away from the countries concerned but their own local looting is way beyond that, money being such a great motivator.
