A face has been reconstructed from a 900-year-old skull found during flood management in Kendal, Cumbria, England, in 2022. The woman, who lived around 1200, survived until she was 50 years old. She was buried without a coffin and is thought to have been of non-elite status. Analysis of her teeth and bones suggests she had a poor diet, lacking in fish, meat, and dairy.

🏛️ Discovery Context

In 2022, during flood defense construction around Holy Trinity Church in Kendal, Cumbria, archaeologists uncovered 28 human burials, including 15 articulated skeletons. Most remains were crushed from centuries of pressure beneath the churchyard wall, but one skull—belonging to a woman—was remarkably well-preserved.

🧠 Forensic Reconstruction

The skull was sent to Liverpool John Moores University’s forensic arts unit, where specialists used CT scans and digital modeling to reconstruct her face.

The result is a realistic image of a woman from around 1200 CE, providing a rare look at what a non-elite medieval resident of Kendal might have looked like.

👩 Profile of the Woman

Age at death: Approximately 50 years old, which was relatively advanced for the period.

Burial: She was not laid to rest in a coffin, probably wrapped in a linen shroud and placed on the outskirts of the churchyard, indicating a low social status.

Dietary analysis:

Isotope studies of her teeth and bones revealed a grain-heavy diet, with limited access to meat, fish, and dairy.

This supports the theory that she lived a subsistence lifestyle, possibly as a laborer.

Health:

Evidence of chronic osteoarthritis, likely due to manual labor.

A healed fracture in her left arm suggests a fall from height in youth.

Her bones indicate she spent much of her life working outdoors, likely in agriculture.

🧭 Historical Significance

The burial predates the current church structure, built in 1232 AD, indicating earlier settlement activity on the site.
