First aerial view of Stonehenge in Britain

We now take for granted these aerial views of famous sites. It must have amazed and surprised viewers in 1906 when they could see Stonehenge from a new perspective.

In 1906, history was made both in the sky and on the ground. Lieutenant Philip Henry Sharpe of the Royal Engineers’ Balloon Section captured the very first aerial photograph of Stonehenge — and with it, the first aerial image of any archaeological monument in Britain.
