Recent excavations at the Villa Poppaea have uncovered frescoes, including the peacock fresco shown above. The villa is near Pompeii and has been associated with Poppaea Sabina, the wife of Nero. Like the city of Pompeii, the Villa Poppaea was destroyed by Vesuvius in AD 79.

Newly uncovered fresco fragments with vivid imagery of peacocks and theatrical masks.

Decorative schemes in the Second Style (mid–1st century BCE) emphasize illusionistic architecture and refined motifs.
