An intact late-Roman sarcophagus has been unearthed in the coastal town of Cavtat, southern Croatia. It was discovered during excavations at part of the necropolis of the Roman colony of Epidaur. It dates to the 4th-5th centuries AD.

It’s intact and in situ—still in its original position and sealed since antiquity.

Epidaur was a Roman municipium and later a colony, likely founded in the 1st century BC during the wave of Romanization along the Dalmatian coast. It sat on a protected bay, making it a natural harbor and an administrative hub.
