A Roman Army headquarters has been found at the Sexaginta Prista fortress in Ruse, Bulgaria. Sexaginta Prista is Latin meaning “Port of the Sixty Ships.” It was the name of a Roman naval fortress and port on the Danube River, located in what is now Ruse, Bulgaria. The Romans used it as a strategic military and naval base along the Danube Limes, the northern frontier of the empire. The Danube Limes was a chain of Roman forts, legionary bases, watchtowers, roads, and naval installations built along the Danube to control movement, defend the empire, and support military operations. It formed one of Rome’s most important European frontiers. It stretched across modern‑day Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania.
