Ancient Greek elites in the Bronze Age appear to have worn signet rings made of meteoritic iron (pictured above), a rare and prestigious material imported from afar. Chemical analysis of 91 iron artifacts from 33 sites in southern Greece and Crete revealed traces of nickel in 13 rings — the telltale signature of meteoritic iron, not of smelted terrestrial ore. Ten of the rings contained nickel levels consistent with meteoritic iron, which often carries 5–20% nickel and can reach much higher levels in rare high‑nickel meteorites — unlike early smelted iron, which contains almost none. Because meteorites are scarce in Greece and Crete (coastal regions where most fall into the sea), researchers suggest the iron was imported from Egypt, where arid deserts preserve them. Egypt famously utilized meteoritic iron, such as the dagger in King Tutankhamun’s tomb, illustrating a long-standing ancient interest in “metal from the sky.” (See post below.) This study shows that Bronze Age Greeks treasured meteoritic iron not just for its rarity, but for its special cosmic significance, making it a symbol of prestige.
