Colosseum crime requires new security measures

The city of Rome has declared heightened security around the Colosseum after an outbreak of illegal and sometimes violent behavior:

Rome has designated the entire area around the Colosseum as a 24‑hour “red zone” security district, adding constant surveillance, more police patrols, and stricter movement controls in response to a recent surge in vandalism, nighttime trespassing, and tourist‑related disturbances.

The article explains that authorities are installing new cameras, drone monitoring, and reinforced barriers to prevent people from climbing the monument or entering restricted archaeological areas after dark. Police presence will be continuous, with rapid‑response units stationed nearby. Gang activity in Rome dates back to antiquity. Gangs often provided services & goods not provided directly by the govt. Clodius famously terrorized Romans with his army of street thugs, and Crassus, richest man in Rome and one of the triumvirs, made his fortune by setting fires and then offering to buy the property as it burned. Deal done, his private fire dept put the blaze out and then he rehabbed the property at a sizeable profit.
