guy
A Roman torso is up for auction. A 2,000‑year‑old Julio‑Claudian marble torso of a Roman emperor—originally displayed in a temple at Salona in modern Croatia—is heading to auction at Sotheby’s, where it is estimated to sale for 8-12 million. The sculpture’s cuirass has a political message. It’s central image shows Sol (pictured below), the sun god, driving a quadriga (bottom picture) over the sea, possibly symbolizing the dawn of a new imperial order. https://www.popsci.com/science/roman-emperor-torso-sculpture-auction/?shem=aimgspe, Good video on the auction: Edited 12 hours ago by guy
guidoLaMoto
Symbolically communicating Power?-- a guy in a ruffled skirt, leaning back with one hip seductively thrown out to the side? That emperor must have used Tim Walz's publicity agent. I bet the missing arms were sculpted into a two-handed, limp wrist wave too? Speaking of which-- we oughta start a special museum just for all those missing arms & heads from classic statuary. I always check the bottom of the page and see that there are usually several hundred of lurkers on line here at any given time....None of yuse ever have any comments? Pretend you're at a bar after work and jump in the conversation. Nobody in the bar is an expert, but that doesn't stop them from giving an opinion....just don't throw any empty beer bottles at the news reader on the TV.
