A Roman shipwreck has been rediscovered off the Italian coast after 65 years.

Archaeologists have rediscovered a long-lost Roman shipwreck off Punta Chiappa on Italy's Ligurian coast, more than sixty years after it was first reported and then lost. Divers located nine heavily encrusted Dressel 1A wine amphorae at depths exceeding 40 meters (131 feet), confirming the site as the same wreck documented by underwater archaeologists in 1959. The amphorae are thought to be the remains of a Roman merchant vessel carrying wine across the western Mediterranean.

The amphorae date to the late second and early first centuries BC, a time when Roman trade networks were expanding rapidly after Rome's conquest of southern Gaul. Made in Italy's Tyrrhenian region, these containers offer a glimpse into the thriving wine trade that connected Italian producers with communities across the Mediterranean.
