Maybe not a good time to be a tourist in Rome. Protests at the Coliseum have not turned destructive … yet.

Supposed to hit Florence tomorrow, which I would avoid if only for participants saturating trains and overwhelming public toilets. I have seen Italy under duress before, with officialdom not handling things well. My first visit was during a terror scare and paramilitary was everywhere brandishing submachineguns. Mostly 18 yearolds carelessly pointing guns at people.

Maybe around that time was the "Ustica massacre" where a bathroom bomb brought down an Italian airliner (wreckage preserved in a Bologna museum!) and politicians demanded it be ruled as due to a stray NATO missile. Later I was ambushed by German speaking teens with bb guns near Lake Garda, and couldn't interest the police into checking their hideout. Finally I arrived during a volcano eruption whose dust shut down flights and the spillover saturated rail traffic to major Italian towns. Only by standing by a toilet stall did I get mobile, and it was to dull Genoa rather than planned destinations.
