guy
A Roman roadside station, known as a mansio, has been discovered in southern Spain. A mansio was an official Roman roadside station, maintained by the imperial government, along the Roman road network. The word derives from the Latin manere, meaning "to stay" or "remain." A mansio served as a government inn or way station where authorized travelers could rest, eat, obtain fresh horses, and spend the night while on official business. These stations were spaced at intervals along major roads and were part of the cursus publicus, the Roman state communications and transportation system. Government officials, military officers, tax collectors, and imperial couriers could use them while traveling under official authority. A typical mansio might include: Lodging and sleeping quarters Kitchens and dining facilities Stables for horses and pack animals Storage buildings Workshops for repairs Administrative offices Not every traveler could use a mansio. Access generally required official authorization from the Roman government. https://www.heritagedaily.com/2026/10/archaeologists-discover-major-roman-roadside-station/159777 Edited 53 minutes ago by guy
