guy
A further assessment of the Roman fort found in Wales is now suggesting that there is a connection between the fort and Welsh mythology. A previous post (below) described the original find. According to the latest research, medieval Welsh tales collected in the Mabinogion describe Macsen Wledig establishing a camp near Frenni Fawr in western Wales. Historians have generally regarded the story as folklore, although they have long recognized that Macsen was based on the historical figure Magnus Maximus, a fourth-century Roman ruler. Manuscript describing the ancient legend Archaeologist Mark Merrony uncovered evidence of the previously unknown Roman fort in Pembrokeshire. Excavations uncovered fourth-century coins, ceramic tile fragments, an iron writing stylus, and a gaming piece. These finds point to a significant Roman military presence in an area once thought to have seen little Roman activity. https://theconversation.com/i-discovered-a-roman-fort-in-wales-it-may-hold-the-key-to-the-ancient-welsh-legend-of-macsen-wledig-294506 https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/legend-has-it-that-this-roman-emperor-established-camp-wales-newly-discovered-fort-may-offer-proof-that-it-really-existed-180989702/ Edited 30 minutes ago by guy
