Hydraulis-- Roman Pipe Organ

The Romans improved on a Greek idea to produce a pipe organ, the hydraulis. It could be built to produce very loud music, loud enough to be heard above the din at gladiatorial shows. I wonder if Nancy Faust's (long time organist at Comiskey Park) ancestor played "Hey! Na na naah! Hey! Na na naah! Goo--ood bye!" as dead gladiators were dragged from the arena?....or can you picture Nero at one of his famous recitals pounding out "Totus Plurimus Tremoris Pergendus" (Whole Lot of Shaking Going On) as he kicks out the marble piano bench and starts stomping on the keys with his foot?...If he did, maybe senators wouldn't have wanted to fake their deaths as an excuse to leave.

Another view.   https://youtu.be/bP2u8NBI5m8?si=94EmOXS0K18kdrFN In this video, it looks like the purpose of the water is to act as a seal & one way valve for the compressed air reservoir.
