guy Posted yesterday at 02:50 PM Report Share Posted yesterday at 02:50 PM (edited) A Roman temple has been discovered in Driebes, Spain, in the lost ancient city Caraca (about an hour east of Madrid). Investigating began area in 2016, using drones and ground penetrating radar. Ancient sources such as Plutarch and Ptolemy had mentioned the city. https://www.heritagedaily.com/2026/10/traces-of-roman-temple-unearthed-in-caraca/159849 Edited yesterday at 03:12 PM by guy
guidoLaMoto
Romans often built temples to fulfill vows made in times of stress, often in battle. Eg- the temple of Jupiter Stator ( the "Stand Your Ground" Jupiter) in the Forum was built to thank Jove for services rendered in the Rome/Sabine Battle after the "rape of Sabine women," or the temple of Castor & Pollux as thanks for them taking part in the Battle of Lake Regillus. When Camillus defeated the Veil, he dedicated the booty to Juno, main goddess of Veil and built her temple in Rome...that didn't sit well with his soldiers and led to his exile. Temples were not "churches" as we know them. Romans didn't "go to meeting" like moderns of the Judeo/Christian religion. The temples were strictly to honor the gods. Sacrifices were performed in front of the building on the Ara (altar). Only the priests were allowed to enter the temple proper. Magister Craft has his take on temples https://youtu.be/XTFtVvsxPB0?si=XwBQMwgrTdR216KE
