The best wine

Recommended Posts

This topic coincides with CiceroD's a bit, but was one particular wine/vintage known amongst Romans for being the best, the hills of pompeii for example or gaulish wine?

The best wine ever for the roman was the Falerian of the consulate L. (?) Oppimius, still drunk up to Nero's time if I remember well, an information given by many authors including Pliny

Little spelling correction: it's FalerNian (with an 'N') from a region just northwest of Naples. Interestingly, it was a white wine, described by one ancient writer as 'amber' in colour.

Here is the top-ten of Gaius Plinius Secundus Maior, something like a Roman version of Aristotle:

(Naturalis Historia,Libri XIV, Ch. II, "XCI varieties of wine"):

1. "The very highest rank is given to the Aminean grape, on account of the body and durability of its wine, which improves with old age."

2. "The second rank belongs to the vines of Nomentum, the wood of which is red, from which circumstance the vines have received from some the name of "rubell

Under the Empire the ordinary qualities of wine were cheap enough to be sold at three or four cents a quart ;according to Horace the choicer kinds were very costly indeed, entirely beyond the reach of a man in his circumstances.
