G-Manicus Posted November 13, 2007 Report Share Posted November 13, 2007 Round Town News A long running, multi-million-euro project to restore Cartagena's ancient Roman theatre is coming to an end and visitors should be able to visit in the early part of next year. The theatre is in the heart of Cartagena but it was lost for more than one and a half thousand years. The theatre dates back some 2,000 years to the heyday of Cartagena's centuries as an important Roman city. The large theatre dates from around the end of the first century BC. Two Roman princes, Caius and Lucius were thought to have been involved in the project and probably helped pay for it and in the design of the ornamentation, say archaeologists. The theatre was built on one of the highest hills in the city and the seated area was dug out of the rock so that spectators looked down onto the stage.
