The Greek Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the earth to an accuracy of within 10% around 245 BCE. By knowing the distance between two cities (Syene and Alexandria, Egypt) and comparing the angle of the shadow of the sun during the summer solstice, he was able to calculate the circumference of the earth.
