A Piece of the Colosseum returned

Two US tourists who chipped off a piece of the Colosseum in Rome 25 years ago have returned it - along with an apology for taking it.

Alternative reading: "our security sucks".

It's next to impossible to prevent that kind of vandalism, unless you take the Stonehenge approach, which I don't think Rome can afford.

Never having been to Rome, I wonder whether they have signs up (as in our subways over here) that read: "If you see something, say something"? Better still: "If you see something, DO something."

It takes very little to encourage private citizens to become vigilantes -- and their policing efforts (especially if they become violent) can be highly entertaining. What better place, too, for such fun, than the Colosseum?

"You chipped off a piece?" *unsheathes sword* "HAVE AT YOU!! AAARRRRRGH!!!"

I'm not sure that will work with the kind of crowd the Colosseum attracts.

Judging by first impressions, they don't seem to be literate.

When I was to Herculaneum only weeks ago, I saw some children pick up pieces of a mosaic and give it to his friends. He's lucky that he's still alive no doubt. Anyway, nobody else cares, not even the kids teacher, people just don't care very much unfortunately.
