Medicus Instruments

Pertinax

a re-created set. As ive mentioned elsewhere the Pitt-Rivers Museum in Oxford is an excellent place to visit to see many ancient/folk medical instruments-as usual many of great sophistication and decorative excellence. The residual "blood" is very realistic on this example is it not?

As a side note...do you know what they were used for?

a substantial number ( on the right) are probes of various types-you can see different shape variations and angles , if we are looking at combat wounds we need to get bone shards out and any foreign bodies. We see to the left cutting implements for incisions, at the base a saw , the round disc is employed in trephanation ( getting into a damaged skull-to relieve pressure, retrieve bone shards and pull back impacted skull fragments. There are tweezers in a pocket on the mid left .The hammer is likely to be for trephanation as well.

This is not strictly my speciality, more where my speciality meets direct intervention, so forgive any errors.

Cruse has some nice illustrations in Roman Medicine.

What metal used for them? And when they was used?

I found different ancient medical instruments in Crimea last summer. They were from bronze (2BC) and looked more older.

Bronze again Lacertus-these are a modern "re-creation" but they are a very faithful copy of retrieved originals.
