Is it me or does the angel has a severed neck.

 

You and your Catholic mind! It's not an angel, its Nike... All the motifs on that frieze are Greco-Roman polytheistic. :lol:

 

I don't think the stone was split, though I don't know how weathering would cause that discoloration
