  1. To moderator. Themistius was third century AD Roman writer.
  2. Does anybody have English translation of Themistius` Discourses? I need to translate Or., VII, 86B-C: εν υπογραφεως αει μοιρα διαβιους εκ του μελανος και της καλαμιδος.
  3. At least Justin II and Tiberius Constantine weren`t bearded and you don`t know, but old Justinian`s mosaic pictures are bearded. See this one for example:
  4. The reasons of this war were described also by Orosius. In his opinion,
  5. The most famous collection of Roman prophecies are so called Sibylline books. The prophecies of Roman pagan Sibyl were preserved by some Roman and Greek writers and one of the most important among them is Phlegon of Tralles. In the 10th fragment of his "Incridible things" there are some excerpts from Sibylline prophecies. Then the 3rd fragment of the same work consists of the prophecies of roman commander Publius. There are also Christian (or Judaic) Sibylline books. They have survived almost intact.
  6. Roman Middle Age senate was city council. You can find some information about it in "The History of Florence" of Machiavelli.
  7. Byzantines speak and write in middle greek. There are special middle greek dictionaries and I even have one.
  8. I would add Aristodemus of Cumae. Suda, s.v. "Aristodemos": Son of Aristokrates [and] tyrant of Italian Cumae, a man who because of his birth was not just an ordinary man; he was called "Softy" by the citizens - and in time the nickname was more familiar than his [real] name - either because he was an effeminate boy and let himself be treated like a girl, or because he was by nature mild and slow to anger. He waged wars against the Etruscans and defeated them in some battles.
  9. According to Gregory of Tours, roman emperor Anastasius gave Clovis a title "consul" and after that he called himself consul or Augustus (Historia Francorum, II, 38). It sounds doubtful, but I didn`t find any commentary.
  10. Maybe: Psellus, Chron., VII ? Like Malalas.
  11. Theophanes, AM 6208: The same story you can find in "Breviarium" of Nicephorus.
  12. All official emperors except Julian were christian, but what about usurpers? Philostorgius calls Western Roman emperor-usurper Eugenius pagan (XI, 2). Are there other sources about his belief? Was Procopius, nephew of Julian, pagan? It seems that сynic Heraclius (he was old friend of Julian, that`s why I think he was pagan) was one of his pals (Eunapius apud Exc. De sent. Mai. P.267).
  13. Ammianus Marcellinus, XXI, 10, 8; 12, 25. Ammianus blames Julian for Nevitta who was appointed co-consul of Mamertinus, because Nevitta was a barbarian.
  14. You`re very naive. You think they never killed and subjugated themselves? And only Europeans are responsible for all sins?
  15. No. And "UNRV map" is a good example of money obsession.
  16. Theodosius didn`t order to destroy books of the Alexandrian Library, it was a private initiative of Egyptian christians. And they didn`t destroy all books, but only part of them. See Orosius, VI.15.31
  17. Vatican change of heart over 'barbaric' Crusades
  18. You think Visigoths and Vandals are not Germanic Tribes?
  19. He died in 594 AD or later, but yes, his "History" comes down to the year 591. I read his work and I`m sure. Believe me.
  20. I`d like to know what this belief is based on. With the help of Franks. See "History of Franks" of Gregorius Turonensis, chapters about their embassies to Constantinople.
  21. Constantius told him to be satisfied with the title of Caesar and to surrender of the title of Augustus (Ammianus Marcellinus. XX.9). He wasn`t actually "the last"... His nephew Procopius and Eugenius were pagans too, but they were ill-fated usurpers.
  22. But the maps from "Allgemeiner historischer Handatlas" are in Latin.
