these songs are so stupid! I had never heard them before... of course I perfectly understand them, but I can't help for the missing verse, I don't know where to find it.
I think they aren't traditional songs of my region. The most famous here are "Oh mia bela madunina" and "la bela la va al fosso". If you like, I can find the lyrics and post them.
About the "Ritmo Cassinese"... I read it in modern Italian, it's very nice, but here you posted only verses 40-52:

I can speak any dialect, at least I can understand the ones of my region but if someone from the south speaks in his I dont understand a word...
And all the young people are like me. We only speak Standard Italian, as you call it.

Oh yes! The "Placito Capuano" is vey famous. But I can easly understand it with no specifical studies, just with some imagination and using the head.
I dont study Classical Greek, Andrew, but many friends of mine do and they say the same thing!

I've just bough my new schoolbooks for the next year. I've a new latin book, with many (original) texts from the Vulgata and i read something... I've been studying latin only one year, but i can easly understand the Genesis although i can't read more classical texts adapted for my level of knowledge. That's weird!

the only big difference between italian and latin is the presence of declansions i think. Verbs and nouns are pretty similar.
Concerning our culture...we have more latin and roman elements than everyone else in the world

The actors playing Roman soldiers (Pilatus excluded) were speaking Latin
yes they are and they really seem italian actors. I dunno if their voices are the original ones but i recognized the accent...

I don't know what you mean exactly with "guardian", but I would say "Custodes Imperii"..a more comprehensive term, semantically speaking (in my opinion).

yes, "Il cane, Maria, vide".
Even without commas.
But I would be writing a poem or something like that, because it sounds like...uhm...how do you say in English... high, old fashioned-style. If you'd say it speaking, they'd think you're mad.
I love these lyrics! I read and learnt them (well, not only the first three lines, but the entire Canto) at school at the age of 10.
Because, you see, it is so close to modern Italian that even children, with some help, can read and understand it. ^ ^
