  1. Really a tough one... but my vote would go to my "neighbor" Diocletian for the stability that he brought
  2. If you mean the Equites Dalmatae as listed in the Notitia Dignitatum, there is little information and it is usually assumed that they were equipped with the same clothing etc as other Late Roman cavalry units. Have a look at 'Late Roman Cavalryman AD 236-565', by Simon MacDowall, or 'Roman Military Clothing (3): AD 400-640' by Raffaele D'Amato and Graham Sumner: they might have some more detailed information - and at least extensive bibliographies! Thank you! Yes, Equites Dalmatae is what I meant. I did find quite a bit of information online and my friend also sent me a link to Notita Dignitatum this morning to look up shields and such. Dalmatian coast indeed does not look like the most horse-friendly country and that was even more surprising when I started hearing stories of these horsemen who also served in Britain.
  3. Is there a description of the outfit of Dalmatian cavalrymen?
  4. Thank you. While searching for Dyson, I also found this: http://historiantigua.cl/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Illyricum-in-Roman-Politics-229BC-AD68.pdf which seems to have a nice insight on the area and Roman conquest of the region.
  5. Any information on this uprising? It seems that most people know of wars and battles held in western Europe and very little information on this part of the Empire. I would like to hear if there are resources available on Illyricum and this uprising specifically (Bellum Batonianum) as this seems to be the biggest war operation of the Romans after the Battle of Cannae two centuries earlier. Augustus even resorted to purchase and emancipation of thousands of slaves in order to send enough troops to the Balkans (10 legions were sent there, cc 100 000 men in total). This makes most other, better known campaigns, look like a sweet camping and yet, no word on this.
