  1. Haha, dont get me started. I have been called racist for my thoughts on the so called Ancient Eastern "military", or lack there of.
  2. mithadates was a greek king deafeted by sulla, but sulla let him live BIG mistake years later he started a rebelion and destroyed a lot of citys but his second in command was killed by ceaser 14149[/snapback] No offense, as I like the Emperor series too, but dont use them as your guides. He was not killed by Ceasar, in any way shape or form. Ceasar did in fact beat his son, and coined the phrase afterward of, "I came, I saw, I conquered."
  3. The new RTR 6.0 mod comes out the 22nd of July, its going to be GREAT!!!! If you have RTW and are somewhat bored with the Vanilla version, or want most of the inacurasies taken care of check out rometotalrealism.com.
  4. My knowledge is the Imperial Legionaries wore a red tunic, but that is probably way to simple. As for the Republican Legionaries my guess would be the Hastati and Velites in white(since it was cheaper), Principes maybe in white, or maybe a blue or green, with the Triarii of course in red, since it was the most expensive, and another way for the triarii to show off his wealth.
  5. Hey, I have a question. Wasnt the Roman calvary sometime abolished, and they just hired auxilia calvary instead of fielding their own? If so when did this happen?
  6. Ok, sorry if this has been adressed, but I have a few very broad questions. 1. The gladius-inspired by Spanish swords-when were they implemented, and what was used before them? Where they issued to the republican troops, or were they bought, as such with other equipment? 2. The shield-Ive seen both the oval shield used by Hastati&Princepii in the Republican era and the later rectangular shield called the scutum, which was which? Were the republican shields issued or bought? And when did they come about? 3. Would the republican army have been dressed and equipeed the same during battles? Broadly I know their equipment was purchased, but was it required that they have certain helmets, or armor, or collored clothing etc...? Sorry if Im coming off as coarse, just these things are really bothering me, I cant seem to find anything about it elsewhere. Thanks for the help.
  7. I say early republic, esp. under Octavian, where some experiance and knowledge was had, as well as advancing equipment and such.
  8. I just finnished the book, "The Last King" by Micheal Curtis Ford, about Mithridates. It was fiction, but M.C.F's other books seem to be very close to history for being fiction, so you would think that one would be too.Id never head of Mithridates, but I read the book and did some googles on him, and I have to ask, was he really that great? From what it sounds like, he won 2 littl battles againt the Romans, and was decemated in all the other battles, losing 10s of thousands while outnumbering Romes forces 30 or 50 to 1. It states how he conquered Roman cities or Provinces near and around Pontus, but it seemed like they were too small and out of the way for Rome to really care about, esp with the Civil War going on. Rome put him on the run almost the whole time he was in power, having to flee Pontus. His greatest achiviement I know of was besieging Athens, just to be totally destroyed by Sulla at Chareonea. The book and websites Ive seen compare him to Hannibal, and that just seems absurd. Was he really that great?
  9. Ok, I think I got it, so Constantinople was the capitol for the eastern empire while Rome was the capitol for the west? Didnt the Eastern empire turn into the Byzantine empire or something, or how did it fit in? Thanks.
  10. In the Pre Marian system I know the Roman system went with Velites in front, Hastati, behind them, Principii third, and Triarii in rear with Equites on wings. After the reforms did the system stay the same? Ive heard the velites were abolished and such, but dont really know in general. Thanks.
  11. Hey, could someone please explain to me how the "main" Roman empire descended into having split empires with 2 capitols and what part Byzantian(sp) and Constantinople had to do with it? Thanks.
  12. Hmmmm, interesting stuff. This is getting awfully confusing. I really want to do a 1/72 model battle, and would like to use Macedonians and hoplites as well as Romans, and I cant really find much on google. Even looking up Cynoscephalae I cant find unit lists, and I thought that would be the best bet. But if not Im gonna do Chaeronea. Thanks for the help.
  13. So there were phalanxs being used by Romans. Do you know if they bore the color and standards of the Roman army they were fighting with, or if they were just citizen hoplites? Also, do you know if the Macedonians hired Greek mercenaries against their war(s) with Rome? Thanks alot for your help
  14. Hey, first off Im new here, but have a few questions. I want to do an acinet/classical model/diromma involving Rome. But my questions are Did Rome ever recruit mercenary hoplites to fight alongside the Legionares or to fight in any Roman army? How about the use of Mercenaries (mainly hoplite) against Macedonia? Did the Romans ever have any large scale battles against Greek hoplite forces, or was it all concentrated on Macedon? If hoplite Mercenary units were used, where in the battle line would they be positioned, center or flanks or reserve? And if there were hoplite armies used, were they used with the prereform units or with the Imperial Marius reformed Army? Sorry for so many questions, Im striving for accuracy, so anything helps. Thanks, Brian
