  1. The problem lies more in the fact that the subject matter of which we speak is living history, as opposed to a reflection, study, and comment about past events. Christianity is still around in full force, and therefore is not so easily discussed as say Zeus, Baal, Molech, etc. We can almost assuredly find few, if any, individuals who practice those religions. Because of this we can look back and debate with little obstruction. I myself am a Christian, but having been immersed in professional studies and surrounded by individuals from all walks of life (Theologians, Historians, Scientists, etc.), I am accustomed to seeing the debate over Iesu Christi continue to the point of absurdity. I am also used to those who see the futility of my faith. It doesn't bother me to hear someone mention my convictions as lacking (or in many cases much more profane language). The fact of the matter is that we can debate this for hours on end, neither side having gained ground because both exhibit faith in their views. For a Christian, the events surrounding Yeshua are of a supernatural divine nature, therefore the impossible is possible. To others it is a matter of opinion as varied as the denominations that claim to follow Him. I have to drive an hour to a lecture so I will hopefully be back soon to post more. I've been terribly busy as of late, and for that my apologies. Keep the discussion civil and remember that everyone's views are their own. Discuss, do not command
  2. Do keep me informed Primus, as this evening I will be at my college campus indulging in a class in canoeing. Oh joy, oh rapture, oh heart's delight! Marcus/Telakyte, Divine Republic
  3. I've watched both and simply been too busy to post until now. But I have returned to say what I'm sure by now everyone already knows: The series is a complete bust. I had my first reservations when they took liberties in the storyline of Octavian. One, the beginning of the series has Iulius informing young Octavian that he is not to accompany him on the Parthian campaign, which we know he was to partake in. Two, he was NOT in Rome during the assassination, but instead at Apollonia in Illyricum, preparing to go on the said Parthian Campaign. Further portrayal of Octavian as a complete teenage hormone driven lad is out of character. His "uncle" had given him ample opportunities from command of a cavalry wing in the Hispania campaign to serving as Master of the Horse under Caesar's dictatorship. This is contrary to the "My Uncle hates me" mentality that is depicted throughout the film. As to the second episode? I don't warrant it a lengthy comment. I shall instead end by declaring the series heresy and worthy of being burned in the fire, its contents being erased from the memory of man. Marcus Justinus, Divine Republic
  4. Well, I was an Existential Thinker. I think I should start a cult. Or become a head of state. Anyone with me? WE'LL RULE THE WORLD...I mean...we'll solve all the earth's problems and have world peace *cough*.
  5. Wish I'd have popped on sooner to give my review since I saw it day 1. Overall: well done drama of a historical setting. Riddley's style. While not historically accurate in many places, I didn't expect, or necessarily want it to be. About Muslims better than the Crusaders, or vice versa... Simply put if you go there with a preconceived notion of either side you'll see that portrayed. Honestly Riddley did a fine job of balancing it. Crusaders were vicious in many circles, while there were others that had quite a problem with the concept of "slay all pagans." Likewise you see fanaticsm among the Saracens, some preferring to think that they will cleanse the lands of the invaders. Others, like Saladin prefer to believe war is war and that you should fight with an awareness of God. They make distinctions between religion and spirituality, showing the politics of the Pope (indirectly) and greed of some Crusaders. While others are genuinely concerned for their souls and are attempting to do the right thing. I enjoyed the movie and will be buying it. That's all.
