    Election for Consul and praetor

Hi! With my book still left in Italy and me here, in Sweden I turn to You for help, my dear ancient friends. I'm doing research about the time when Marius lived (so we are around 100BC). My question is about the elections that was held in Campus Maritus. In witch month where the elections held? I know that the consuls were elected first and then, 2-3 days later, the praetors, but...in witch month? Also, did the new consuls entered their consulate in Marsch (the first month in the roman calender(?) or was it earlier? I have tried to find a good site where you can read about each month, how many days every month had, when they celebrated Idus etc, but haven't yet succeded... As I said, this question is about before Ceasar lived and revolted the roman calender. Please forgive my english but I hope that You can understand the most of all my questions. Best regards!

    Army food

That might make for an interesting thread - how, why and how often did Roman legionaries mutiny? Yes. Totaly agree on that one. In many books i've read it's often mention how close it was to mutiny and how a general or outsend from Rome succeded to "cool" the legioneres down. But it's not often I've comed over situations when it's accutaly has happend.

    Army food

Thanks alot for your answers! I think I understand a little bit more now than before. I have always thougt that each legionere hade like a "survival-pack" on them for hard times but that might just have been my ignorence. I am aware about the hard-tack-biscuit and the fact that in some regions they also hade bacon and sour wine. Well, once again thanks alot for your answers!
  7. This might be a stupid question but I have searched all the over the internet and dublechecked all my books (included "The Complete Roman Army") but i can't just find the answer I seeking for. I know that the soldiers ransons for mostly was transported on the wagons in the back when they were on campaign but how much did they have on themself? I mean, how long could a legionere survive alone, without any support from his suroundings? I'm especially interested about the republican army and before Marius did his reforms.

    All time favorite book

Rubicon is a really good book, I totaly agree. If it's a fiction you looking for i could recomend the series of Conn Iggulden about Ceasar "The Emepror". It's good writing although not totaly correct to history. Also a good tip is Simon Scarrow and his books. Belive the series is called "The silver Eagle" (not sure on that one. I live in Sweden so here we have a translationproblem )) For now I'm reading Steven Saylors serie "Roma Sub Rosa". Also good writing and most of it is historcial correct... Just a few tips...also, everything written by Adrian Goldsworthy is just to dig in too (especially "Ceasar" and "The Complete Roman Army" although they are non-fiction)
  9. Hi! I'm a new user an just resonaly found this awsome site. First of all, forgive my english. I'm from sweden (if thats now is a excuse). Im doing a resarch of my own about Gaius Marius. What im wondering is how much food a typichal legionere ate during one day and how much the totaly sum for the whole legion on one day was. Is there anyone who can help me? Strenght and honor
