  1. Theodoscius and his proclamation of Christianity as official relgion.
  2. Ovid's last part of Metamophises got him into a little bit of trouble with a well known aristocrat, Augustus i think. Did he get exiled for that or did he do something else to get that honor.
  3. Look at a thread about the virtue of his march on Rome started by myself, it should help.
  4. Rome had no police force, just protectors of the government officials through lictors. They really did not have a jail either. Trials were very common in rome and common punishment was exile, and if severe enough to be thrown from Tarpian rock, or simple execution- even though it was looked down upon and rarley did during republic, Cicero is one example of someone who had Catalinna's cronies executed.
  5. 1054 is a very important year, as it saw the splitting of Christianity. 400 years after this Byzantium would fall. Is their an effect on Byzanine's fall that can be attributed to the Great Schism. And from the Russian point of view and interesting coincidence, the death of the great Yaroslav the wise who brought Orthodoxy to the Russian people, or who would soon be the Russian people.
  6. Since no one gave a new quote I guess I will "I don't like you, Sabidius, I can't say why; But I can say this: I don't like you, Sabidius"
  7. This is just a thought I had the other day and thought I would get some other opinions. The Triumph was an Etruscan invention borowwed by the Romans. Did it have an impact in the fall of the republic with generals doing almost anything to get one, or was it just for show.
  8. The reasons in the supposed shrinking of people in Europe from the giant germanic and gaullic people, is simple genetics. The Romans and Germanic/Gaulic peoples mixed their genes, thus causing smaller children to be born than before.
  9. As far as the Romans go I would probably place their average height at about 5'5" or so, for you metric users you can convert it yourself, as Julius Caesar and Gaius Marius were considered very tall at about 6 foot to 6'2" and the Gaulic warriors whom they viewed as giants, would probably be around 6'4" and taller.
  10. A service I always find handy in ancient societies is a means of torturing opponents.
  11. What is your favorite poet, and what do you think his poems say about Roman society and a poets poems are their view of people around them and also of theirs and other's societies.
  12. between hanibals victory at cannae and scipio's victory at zama when did hannibal lose grasp of victory or when did the tide turn.
  13. I wonder what caesar's would look like if he did that... Gaius Julius Gallicus Romanus Graecia Egyptus Ibericus Caesar. Wow what a name.
  14. they likly are indo-european migrants and take the trojan origins because of greek mythology. Read a book by TJ Cornell called The Beginnings of Rome, it puts it all in perspective.
  15. Considering some very prominant members were black, that tells me that Romans did not view race as important as other aspects, such as language, dress, and other such cultural issues.
  16. If i ever catch anyone who sent me a computer virus I will be rocking my fist into his face.
  17. This was a topic a while back and thought I would start off this new forum with it. when did the Byzantine empire change from Roman to Greek.
  18. not if you sack their village and slaughter everyone that is useless.
  19. As in all ancient things, there are varying versions in mythology as well as different burial and funeral practises.
  20. keep in mind though that just because a movie is historically inaccurate does not make it a bad movie. Gladiator is one of my favorite movies, but historically it was terrible.
  21. you have to look at what it did to the romans after the battle down the line. After Adrianople the roman western empire never fully recovered. The romans won the war with hannibal, the parthians were eventually defeated by Agrippa and the standards recovered, the loss of the legions never led to rome's downfall, but adrianople was very significant to the fall of the west.
  22. God help us if they decide to do the Odyssey, they would have the Phaecians attack Odysseus, and Athena trying to kill him, not to mention a plot by Penelope to kill Odysseus if ever he shall return, and Agamenon would still be alive.
  23. What historical movie do you think did the worst job with historical accuracy. My pick is Troy. No Cassandra- or i might have missed it- Agamemnon killed by Achilles woman not by Clymenestra and his cousin, Ajax killed by Hector and not by suicide after realizing a rage he had gone into after losing rights to Achilles gear to Odysseus, and Menelaus being killed by Hector when Homer has Telemachus meeting him in Sparta with Helen by his side in the Odyssey.
  24. What needed to happen is when you are buried or burned on the funeral pyre a coin is put into each eye, and then the events that I described would occur. If you did not have the money you would be stuck roaming around until you got the two coins. This is not my area of expertise though, so if anyone has anything to add feel free.
