  1. URSUS SAID:

The Celts could still fight each other to death over who got to sit at the most honored spot in a tribal feast, such was their prickly sense of tribal honor. The Romans became a little more cold-blooded and pragmatic within the context of their evolving city-state and empire.

So what your trying to say Ursus, is that the Celts could just stand up to any other warrior and chanllenge him to a dual because he insulted his honor. While a Roman would stand up at a dinner party offer a toast to his oppenent then a couple weeks latter get an assiasian to stab him in a dark alley way in the name of his famliy honor and is own personal ambition??? All in the name of the Imperial State?

  2. Well the Romans excepted bisexuality, they had wives yet they had male lovers.

And famlies were poor as you said and they can't feed them its better to leave them out and pray that someone adopts them then let them consume all the food for all the other 10 members of the family household which also needed to be fed.

I am sure the Romans did alot of incest...even if isn't well documented in the history books. People didn't understand at the time that screwing your sister could have dire consequences.

I disagree I believe that the Romans also took alot of the Greco concepts of sexuality in general.

  3. Well....Honor lets talk about that,

Every society has a sense of honor, so how was Roman "Honor"

    different from Celtic,German,Jappense,Chinese, American, Etc.

Please go into depth about these different cultures and their sense of honor compared to Roman sense of the word "honor."

    Zeke :D

  4. Yeah I have to agree with Ursus.

Alot of Greeco/Roman Pagans that I do meet on the web are...very nationalistic towards Greece, or in the case of Astaru or Slavic Pagan have the hidden agenda of Neo-Nazism.

I also must bring up another topic.....the fact that these revival Pagan Faiths can be cover ups for wider sceams for coporate powers and rich business men trying to be "rebels" by sponsering a Pagan Temple.

Because if there not nationalisitic in nature towards Greece or the Celtic lands for example then they have some hidden agenda to get rich fast.

While others I meet are just people living in a fantasy, I guess if you really wanted you could call me that. But I don't think I am that because I take my religion very sereriously.

Alot of people accuse me of trying to be "cool" because I am a Classical Polythesit myself. If they saw the altar in my room or saw my writings on theology or my study of the faith, I think they would change their minds ;)

Believe it or not the only true Pagans who take their faith seriously and arn''t fantasy dwellers, Neo-Nazis, or Nationalists IN MY OPINION, are ones I have met here on the UNRV, Ursus, Farnir, Fatboy, and some others that are silent :P all take Polythestic worship to its true meaning and not a sherade or a fantasy their all well educated people in their apporahces to their respective faiths and I enjoy that. That is why I have never joined these online Pagan Temples like Nova Roma or the Socities Deoacruvim Aquliva (Or whatever) or even the Julian Society.

But Scanderbeg.....thank you for your contributions and I will certainlty have a look at this page you gave us. :D

  5. Well, I do think it was wrong, but we only think it is wrong because of Christian morality and the laws of romanticism and chilivary that have been implemented on soceity saying what we can and cannot do.

We only think the way we do because people have already set down "rules" an "regulations" on how a society is "Virtuous" or not. It depends entirelly on the culture, the goverment propoganada and what religion the general populance adhears to.

Example: In the Middle Ages people never washed their hands, or took baths or had any type of hygine what so ever beause the church basically said that hygine wasn't a big issue because it didn't help Jesus in anyway. Yet in Imperial Rome people would have found this appaulling, considering the fact that they went to that baths everday after work to get clean and be social. Different societies have different ideas of what is "Right" and what is "Wrong." And the Europeans of the Middle Ages were compleatly oblivious to the fact that Rome had a totattally different set of rules on what was right and wrong. Yet they thought their primitive fuedal system was much better then a Heathen Empire that tryed to keep clean.

    lol:

So Skarr......when you talk about the ancient woman and how they were treated bad all I can do personally is not really complain about it because that is how Roman Soceity worked. The Romans thought that woman had a certain place and men had a certain place. Romans thought that men were NOT EQUAL. They divided themseleves into different social classes to identify each other by their rank and how much power their family name had. The Romans were fierecly clan related...Juli, Flavians, Neros, Publius, Varsuses, Corenlius, and so on and so.

Woman wern't thought of as equal to men, they were just woman and they were born woman. Woman in Roman Soceity were there for a couple reasons:

    1) To marry powerful Patrican families to incerese the power and wealth of their husband. Marriage was almost entirelly a social thing not out of love.

    2) To expand the population of Rome by having children to provide male heirs to the familiy clan name or females to marry off to richer suitors of richer families the belonged to the Senate.

    3) In rare cases the Roman men might love their wifes and enjoy having a wife.

I am sure once the Roman men married their wives; after a few years they began to love each other. It started out as a social affair but I am sure like any human they enjoyed having sex and being companions.

Roman woman did have some degree of power because they influeneced their husbands in bed. Or so I am assumming, sure the men had control of the household but I am sure woman still had something to do with it.

And about the babies being left to die.....Alot of them were mentally ill or retarded. Remember Romans had alot of in incestuial relations with their sisters of brothers so alot of their children came out defformed. And we kill baby lambs and baby cows everday.....what is the different with a baby human. Sorry to sound cruel.....but if we really want to become smpathetic towards living things we should stop killing baby everythings! ;)

Back then it was socially normal to throw babies out.....and though we can complain about how Roman men treated their wives or left their children to die there is nothing we can do about it because it happened along time ago and back then it was normal to do such things. Just like Slaves were normal back then.

I WOULDN'T want my kid thrown on the street or anything and I don't support the idea of husbands controlling their wives or slaves for that matter, but I am sure many will agree with me, that though the Romans had their faults (or so what the current mortality says in our American Society) that their Empire was by far one of the greatest man kind has ever seen.

And its also Ironic.......thanks to Roman ideas of the Republic, we have a flourishing Democracy today with full civil rights for all our citzens so nearly 2,000 years latter the Romans made up for their wrongs by giving us a plan to stop slavery, male dominace and cruelty to infants.

So in my opinion they changed the world though they didn't know it at the time. :D

  6. Yeah I guess you could say that Valentinian though....I have no emtional or sexual or physical attachements to any men what so ever.

Certain males I wish I looked like because I am obbseced with what I look like but thats out of the point here.

    hahahahah

  7. The only think I don't like about Trajan is how he had a liking for young boys.

Didn't alot of Romans like "young boys" and those boys went along with it??

Hardrian had a male lover...Antinous I believe his name was, one day he drowned in the Nile and Hardrian built nine cities across the empire in his name (Antipolis) and a state sponsered cult sprung up form it. I see nothing wrong with Tarjan liking young boys......as long as he wasn't a molestor lol.

It was a norm in Roman socity

  8. To add........the other sole intention of UNRV besides Roman History and things reltated to Roman History......is the game called Roma Victor which most of our members will be playing in the years to come! :D Includding myself.....lol.

But yeah Roman History comes first....then a lot of Roma Victor on the side.

  9. To back my friend Ursus up.

I looked into Nova Roma for a bit but never did join it.....because it seems a little absurd. I mean the idea is wonderful don't get me wrong......but if you want to honestly create a new Roman State then you got to have millions even billions of dollars to start up the building projects. I may build Pagan Temples one day but thats if I get ALOT of money.....and thats a maybe!

I don't like these Intertnet Micronations because they become severally cult like after a while. Thats why I don't join Pagan Soceities on the web because I know they will never become anything or they will become severally cult like and physco. If you want to expand Pagan Faith then you got to go out into the community (I intend to do that) get donations, try to convice people that your faith is right, set up a theology for it and have a meeting place. Over the web......you can get alot of people but you don't really know who they are...most are fat nerdy guys that are just looking for a good time to escape their horrible, miserable lives and live in a fantasy. (Thank the good gods I am not one of those people)

Not saying that about Nova Roma of coarse.....maybe Nova Roma is different you know, maybe it could become something.... but I doubt it. I did look into the site and did see you have 10 barren acers in Texas. Thats intresting......but I don't know if anything will become of it. I fully intend to get Roman Paganism going again but not over the web thats just plain silly. lol

Anyway....the guy from Nova Roma......I encourage you to ditch it and talk to some Real life Pagans.....Me, Ursus, Farnir, Fatboy and some others I don't remember. Come talk to people who arn't even Pagans we got alot of atheists and Catholics and others Christians and all sorts of faiths here. Whether your black, white or any other race or support a certain politcial group. We here at UNRV strive for ONE COMMAN GOAL...not to rebuild a Roman State but to study it as best we can....

For we belong to UNRV Roman History Forums and are sole purpose in life is to form an anyansis of Roman History. Noting more and nothing less. I love UNRV.

Anyway, stay here Publius......you won't regret it.

    Ave Atqua Vale,

  10. if there was a vote in a country to adapt roman culture i beleive it could happen but they would not be able to create a empire just a modern replica of a roman province which was a modern country in ancient times.

I agree with that statment lucius,

You could adapt make a goverment just like Rome expect without the Imperlism and slavery and mass empire and such lol. You could have a totattly new Roman Republic. I think that is possible.

  11. I am torn between Vespasian, Tarjan, and Aurelian.

Vespasian brought back Rome to its former glory after the fall of the Juli-Cladius dynasty.

Tarjan brought Rome to its greatest economic, military and cultural extent.

And Aurelian restored it after the Crisis of the Third Century.

So I don't which one to choose,

    Zeke

  12. I was considering joing Nova Roma....because I am very zelous Roman/Greco Pagan, but then I didn't because like Ursus I am not one to fallow the rules of others. I like to make my own rules when it comes to what Jupiterus commands me to do. I agree with everything Nova Roma is trying to do though, and sincerly hope its suceeds.

But once again when it comes to my Pagan Religion I make the rules of what rituals and cermonies to perform.

  13. Ok Oligarchies don't nessarially have to be rich (The Communist Parties). But in a way the statment is true most societies are rules by either a dictator or a group of people with the most influenece. I could say Athens was not an Oligarchy but it was. Though the direct Democracy concept allowed any free man to run for office? And it futher limited the power of the rich in Athens.

    Zeke

    Zeke

  14. Have you noticed all societies are Oligarchies, or at least decend into them latter. Most countries are dominated by rich people, who ever holds the most cash and are the most popular rule society and the culture. Sure we have a Democracy where people vote but I bet my life on it that somewhere each day someone in the World bribes a judge or is above the law because they are part of an Oligarchy of infuential rich people.

Here are the important questions to ask yourself,

    1. Do you believe all societies will evedenually become Oligarchies (Rule by a small group of men and woman with the most power and wealth)

    2. Do you think the United States is becoming an Oligarchy/is an Oligarchy???

    3. Do you think that the Oligarchies will always become dictatorships like they did in the fall of the Roman Republic???

Intresting quote to think about as well,

"This how liberty dies, with thunderous applause!"
