Is this a Scorpion or a Ballista? It's often difficult to tell the differance. Although I thinl it's a Scorpion.
Scorpion in this instance.

Thak you for the compliments again, this is one of my own favourite shots....I tell you it was blustry that day, I was frozen when I drove home.

An interesting photo, considering that I've rarelly seen a Spangenhelm fitted with a typically Roman crest.
These are 3rd C AD period horsemen, so not quite at home with the infantry on offer. There is a late Period infantrygroup (Comitatvs) but I am struggling to make contact with them.

Is that marble block a shrine to a deity? Or was a plaque to state that the soldiers had willingly fulfilled their vow to serve the army?
This particular example is a portable Altar.

One of those legionnaires seems to be more heavily equipped than the others, what with his greaves and better quality Imperial Gallic Helmet. It brings a lot of realism to their depiction to have that sort of detail.
The soldier in question also seems to have some fine work on the scabbard of the gladius.

The one that looks like GO?

You think this is strange? In the same Village a rat and a hedgehog take a morning stroll together around the local pub (external not internal) during the summer months. The family of this blackbird stiill nest in the square opposite this place, though the cafe has now changed hands and they tend not to pop inside for a snack.

Oh dear- I have to confess to using a complete smorgasboard:
Panasonic/linux (ie: leica lensed) DMC LX1 or DMC FX8 (its compact baby brother)-this shot is from the LX1.The LX has a staggering zoom lens for a small camera , the FX8 is a minature gem ,but has no framing apparatus save the rear LCD screen.
or
Nikon D50 or vintage Nikon SLR (some lens compatability).
or
Sony cybershot (very blue cast to optics , but a nice compact).

Is this the stuff we call 'Valerian'? jolly good for insomnia!
Thats correct-this is a shot to show the very early leaf formation, in case anyone mistakes it for hemlock!
-
Correct-and this is "Victorian Paterfamilias" personified, nay?

So he hasnt lost his good looks then?

American veterans used to (maybe still do) sell paper poppies on Nov. 11 for the benefit of wounded vets.
I am wearing one as we speak, for that very reason.

These were the men who built Hadrians Wall : II AVG , along with XX and the "new" Valeria Victrix. It is possible that some men might have also been present when the Antonine wall was built if they had been young recruits in AD 122.

Thank you again.
I have mentioned about perches elsewhere but it bears re-iteration. To keep a bird healthy the talons must grip a branch or branch like perch, they are required by nature to grip robustly, to keep sinew and claw in best condition. Many birds of prey have a sort of "ratchet" mechanism in the foot which cranks up pressure the more a prey animal (or your wrist ) moves about. The reflex is automatic, the only way to stop an animals talons biting into you is to cease moving and relax regardless of the pain.
Without a perch the bird would sicken and die.

You can imagine that guy being part of the Claudian invasion of Britain.
Right on target , these are Claudian era troops.

Amazing looking owl on the carpet there!
African Eagle Owl- she thinks she is human (no really).

I was there again today.

The Picts must have been impressed when they saw that. The Auxillaries on the wall did their job pretty well for a long time. It's sad considering the stone from the real wall was torn down by the Victorians to build roads.
The Jacobite Rebellion was the first cause of major vandalism , for the very reason you speak of. If our recent ancestors had been more thoughtful who knows what sort of monument we would still have.

I just have to sing....
BADGERS! BADGERS! BADGERS!
MUSHROOM! MUSHROOM!
how did you manage to get so close to the badger? did you take the photo out of the window?
She is about five feet away from me, I am sat at an open door-earlier she had nearly walked over my foot.

How much of the actual fighting stances and techniques of the Samurai have survived to modern Kendo? I have read articles and books on Japanese warfare in the Medieval era and beyond (Edo Jidai 1615-1850) and they say that many of the fighting styles of the Samurai were completely different to those practised by many martial artists today.
It would not be possible to use Kendo stances and cuts , and survive with a live sword-however the ritualised cutting is more about mental strength than technical skill (though you have to have that skill first ) .Kendo was invented to stop over eager pupils damaging each other , and the shinai cannot mimic the sword (different physics and form) but the rigour of the training is the key .I will be off forum for a day or so , and will pick this up again.

I've always wondered what they wore under their helmets seeing as some people claim that there was no sruffing inside the helmet bowl, which would have made it rather uncomfortable to wear.
Would the soldiers of the later empire wear the traditional 'pillbox' and 'Phrygian' caps under their helmets? or would they worn them only when off duty?
Its essential to have an extra layer-particularly when its hot, the helmets can only be pushed off with one finger they get so hot during summer( I kid you not) ! As regards the pillbox hats im uncertain, my contacts are Claudian/Flavian era (apart from the mounted Auxilliae who are 3rd C AD, and they wear this style).
