Roman Fort of Trimontium: New studies to begin

Trimontium is a Roman fort found in Newstead, Scotland. It is located about sixty miles north of Hadrian’s Wall. New ground penetrating radar technology is being used to better outline the fort complex. Hopefully, new discoveries and insights into life at the fort will be found.

Trimontium was a Roman fort at Newstead, near Melrose, Borders, Scotland, close under the three Eildon Hills (whence the name trium montium). The fort was identified by Ptolemy in his Geography. Trimontium was occupied by the Romans intermittently from 80 to 211. At the height of the Roman occupation of the fort, about 1500 soldiers and possibly an equal civilian population lived in the settlement.
