The British county of Kent is rich in Roman history. More evidence of Roman settlements in Deal, Kent have been found during excavations for a housing development:

An archaeological investigation overseen by RPS Consulting Services Ltd (RPS) revealed the site was the location of the southern end of a Roman settlement likely representing a large farm or small hamlet, dating from the 1st to 4th centuries AD.

The development was excavated by a team of 8 archaeologists in June to August 2022, with the discoveries surpassing the expectations of the team. The artefacts have since been removed, cleaned and analysed by specialist archaeologists.

The findings included Roman pottery recovered from cremation burials on the site, as well as pits, ditches and postholes which had been cut into the ground and filled up with silt over time; these indicate that there were once substantial timber buildings in place.

Kent, unlike the rest of southern Britain, retained a military presence after the initial invasion. This was probably connected with the importance of the harbour facilities in maintaining miltary and other supplies. Kent has one of the largest concentrations of fortifications in the country aside from Hadrian’s Wall. Tiles stamped with the initials of the Classis Britannica, the British fleet, have been found at the forts at Richborough, Dover, and Lympne, and in some quantity at Wealden iron-smelting sites, indicative of links with the military.  From Ickham, close to Richborough, comes evidence for military supply through the state in the form of fourth century lead seals discarded from opened sacks. 3 water mills and associated settlements stood here, with evidence for lead, copper, iron and pewter working.
