Second Roman statue displayed in Heraclea Sintica, Bulgaria

A second Roman statue found at Heraclea Sintica near Petrich, Bulgaria, will go on display. (Below is a thread about the discovery of the first statue.)

 

 

 

The second marble statue unearthed at Heraclea Sintica has been fully restored and is now displayed at the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia. Discovered by Prof. Lyudmil Vagalinski’s team, the statue dates back to the 2nd century AD, probably during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, and originally stood in the city’s central square for about 200 years.

Reneta Karamanova led the restoration, using carbon rods from Italy to stabilize cracks. In October, the statue will be moved to the Archaeological Museum in Petrich for permanent display. Although the figure's identity remains unknown, it was clearly revered, possibly representing a prominent citizen. After a 4th-century earthquake, pagan locals hid it to protect it from early Christian iconoclasm.
