Herculaneum scroll sheds light on stoicism

New insights into the philosophical origins of Stoicism are being gained through the study of the scrolls from Herculaneum. One of the scrolls, known as PHer. 1018 and pictured above, contains Philodemus’ “History of the Stoa.” This work explores the origins of the Stoic school, founded by Zeno of Citium.
